Well, I have had no offers on the 912 as a whole, so I am
thinking seriously about parting it out. I see a lot of people looking for parts and such so maybe I could get rid of it faster that way. I'm in Grand Prairie, just outside Dallas. Lemme know if you wanna come look at it before I start selling it little by little on ebay and other places. Pictures are at www.poopstain.net/autos.html -=Allan=- ![]()

Bad Kharma.
Don't do it. Please do not part out a complete '67 912. From what I've read this is a car you've had for a couple months. Was a PPI done before you acquired it? Did you check it out closely? No disclosure or inquiry about condition? It's just not right to part out a solid classic P-car because it needs engine work. |

Well, I have no money to fix it, and no one wants to buy it so...
Am I just supposed to have it sit in the garage forever and not try to recover my loss on this thing? I'm out of ideas. -=A=

Ebay wants me to use a credit card to post an item for sale.
I don't have one to give them,... Thanks for the idea though, that would have been ok except for the fact that I'm sure it would be an out of state buyer wanting me to ship the car, I aint going through the hassle of trying to ship a whole car. Man, I wish I had never traded for this thing, I should have known there was a reason he didn't want it either. -=A=-

Dear Friend,
Is the car rusted out? By rusted out I mean are the front and rear suspension carriers within the unibody gone? If it is not rusted out then... please, please do not part out that car. With patience and effort, you will find a buyer for it complete. Have you advertised on the 912 Registry, Hemmings, eBay, Pelican 911 board, Excellence (free w/ subscription), or the 356 registry (also free w/ subscription)? Have you called local or regional shops to see if they or anyone they know would want to buy it? Taking a dollar loss may not be as bad as the hassle of parting it, or living with the fact that you deliberately took a complete car off the road, permanently. Maybe you have parted a car before, but in case you haven't I would like to dispell the idea that it is an easy solution to your problems. This goes for anyone else too. Parting a car takes a lot of time, labor, and space. When you're finished, you have to get rid of the carcass (ha ha). You have to spend a lot of time advertising the parts, sometimes you have to photograph the parts, you have explain their condition to wary buyers, find packaging to ship the parts in, and worry about getting screwed on shipping. You also have to find space for the parts until you sell them, carefully organize them and sometimes clean them, and then deal with the parts that you do not sell. In the time it takes to recoup your money selling it bit-by-bit, you may well have found a buyer for it complete. I apologize for this soapbox speech, but I believe too many restorable cars are getting broken up because of the market that eBay has created. I have performed two 'rustorations' in my time. Both cars were candidates for being parted. Both projects cost me way more than I ever intended to spend. At many points both projects caused me to doubt my abilities and my sanity. During the second project I actually put everything up for sale out of frustration (I removed the ad after 24 hours). My point is that I feel your pain. But, I am only too glad I didn't give up on those projects. Granted, I'm in Maryland and have an East Coast/rust-belt point-of-view. Complete cars with engine problems are generally a lot easier to sell than complete cars with rust problems. There may be no getting around the financial loss that associated with your decision to purchase this old car, but please, save yourself the trouble, and save the 912 community the heartache, and, unless it's totally rusted out, please don't part it. Sincerely, Enrique |

There is one place on the passenger side of the pan that needs replaced
and there are a couple small bubbles in the paint in a couple places but thats about all I found, the car is pretty solid I guess. I have had a few Vw's and have parted out one. It was sad indeed but I really doubt I'll ever be able to afford to rebuild the motor in this thing and if I don't do that then I'm left with a car in my garage that I cannot enjoy. I know this sounds like a poor pittiful me thiing but I'll be willing to bet you guys make a lot more money than me and would be more able to spend a lot more on one than I could A piston and cyl set cost about $150.00 for a Vw the ones for this thing that i found are at least $850.00 thats a big big diffrence then you gatta add the cost of a valve job and other little extras. I'll quit griping about it now, but I'm just so damn mad at myself for getting suckerd like I did. -=A=-

the car looks nice and unmolested. "unmolested" being the key word thus valuable to the majority of people looking for a 912. i am sure you can find a buyer for your low asking price. i saw a 69 912 with an asking price of $7500 at the local community college (DVC) and it was...crap. reach out to the right market - someone who wants to buy a fixer upper and plans to do the work themselves. i'd ck with spencer (510 653 EASY) from EASY (salvage shop) and ask to post an ad on their shop bulletin board. their clients are the perfect market.

Some suggestions...
Why are you assuming you need new pistons? Valve job? True, maybe your engine is tired and in a perfect world you would do a complete rebuild, but thats not your only option. Many, many cars have gotten by on a poor mans rebuild to buy time. Lets asume the bottom end is OK (car runs doesn't it?). Then don't touch it. Worry about the top end and the smoke/compression issues. Assuming the P&C's arn't totally shot, new rings are only $80.00 at NAPA. Valve seals and gaskets can be had for about $100.00 from a variety of suppliers. Never tried, but you might be able to lap the valves to get them to seat better (for awhile, at least). Several parts stores will loan you the ring compressor, cylinder hone, valve compressor, Etc. so you really only need basic tools. A motivated person could have this done in a weekend. Why not give it a try? If you uncover greater demons, then consider parting out. This is essentially what I did with my engine, and after 20K of daily driving, its still running strong. Good luck Cb |

Well, due to the fact that I now believe the motor is good. just looks
like it needs new rings, and the oil leak fixed, I might have to think about the price. I'm still open to offers, but think it's got a little more value now that it's running on all 4 cyls now. -=A=-

Thanks Kevin, for donating some time to help Allan figure out his situation.
Allan, You seem very technical from what you said about working on Bugs. I would venture to guess that you could do the work yourself. Based on this, and the hints you left about how Chuck may have gotten a really good price for the car when he sold it to you, maybe you should consider putting away a few bucks each week and doing the rings and seal. Looks like you'd end up with a great little car and you now know you have a huge group of friends all around the world, and right here in Texas, to help you out. Just think about it, sounds like you need somethig positive in your life. KEEP THE FAITH!! Morrie

I must say I do feel a lot better.
And to think, a big bulk of the problem escaped me. A lousy spark plug was causing 99% of the trouble. You guys are Great, Specially Kevin, an awsome guy. Thanks millions. -=A=-
