'69 912/911 differences
Im sure tons of people have asked this question, but unfortunately i haven't had any luck finding all the differences between the 1969 912 and the 911 in the archives.
Im thinking about building an I stock 69 911e for pca club racing, and as many of you guys probably know there are more 912's out there than 911's and they're cheaper. So my question is other than the engines, what are the differences. Are the interiors the same? Same oil tanks? Are the 901 5spds the same as those in the 911? Do they have the "M" brake calipers or different ones? What other troubles could you foresee in transforming a 69 912 into a 69 911E? Thanks for the help |

ok i've figured out more, and now see that the 69 912 interior is pretty much identical. I read somewhere that the engine compartments are different with respect to the oil tank opening, any thoughts? Also some have said that the brake discs are thin, and not vented, so are they still the m calipers?

A 912 is essentially a 911T without the six-cylinder engine. Of course, this also means deleting the oil tank and it's mounting holes (as you mentioned), and it means different rear motor mounts. Other than that, the interior, exterior, brakes, trans, etc. is the same. The E is the next trim level up from the T, and I know that most had sway bars. It's rare to find a 912 or 911T that came equipped from the factory with any sway bars. I believe vented discs were also available on the E, and standard on the S.
As for rarity, the '69 912 is more rare than a '69 911. Less produced, less saved, less restored. They were the least expensive Porsches, and weren't treated quite as well (for the most part). It's possible to get a deal on a 912, but remember that it will cost as much to fix up a 912 as it will to do a 911, and even the engine costs between the two are very similar (the 912 is a bit easier to maintain, but parts are still pricey). Just buy the 911 to start with. You CAN find great deals on Ts or Es and that way you'll have all the mounts/oil tank/engine parts/etc. right off the bat. A solid 912 is going to set you back quite a bit, and then you'd have to buy all the 911 part (oil tanks run upward of $500 and engines are $3k+ for good ones. Then suspension and brake upgrades. By that time your back up to the $8-$10k that you would have spent for a decent early 911. Good luck, G |

Griznant is right on. Buy a 911 to begin with. There are few real differences, ie the oil tank and its mounting, plus the moter mounts, plus a couple of wires in the harness, plus the tach and a couple of guages. But the cost of upgrading to the 911 is high. The moter mounts will be a few hundred, the oil tank a grand, the guages a couple hundred and the engine of course. When you are all done its still a 912 but converted. So why bother?
