912E starter motor Question and 912

Hi I went to start my 912E and it was dead good battery clicking only in the front of the car (relay i guess) nothing (no clicking )in the rear.

So does this sound like the soleniod on the starter being duff.

I will look in to weather or not it is a lose wire as later in the day it started fine and then I tried it again when I got home nothing again.

BIG question is what is the soleniod from as it is a 912E VW or Porsche if it is Porsche is it as the E is based in the 911S is it a 911S starter. ( I hope it is VW Cheep)

any way as a hardened Porsche fan I just got some mates to give it a little push and it started fine and did not spoil the day. Did over 300 miles yesterday well pleased with the E (only had it 3 weeks I bought it in LA )

Cheers

Mark, I've had similar problems. I've got 2 912's a 67 and a 68 also a '70 911e. The starter on all three of these are interchangable. I've also got a kit car with a vw transaxle with an early 912 engine in it (from a 68 912) that starter is also interchangable. My brother in law owns/runs a starter alternator shop here in Savannah and he says the 65-71 912/911 starter and the 76 912e starter are all the same. Start by checking your ground cables on your car that was the problem with one of mine before. Hope this helps. Jerome

The ground strap on one of mine was bad-internally corroded-and it had the same symptoms you described. That was the transmission to body gound strap. Good luck. Jerome

no earth is good power to the back is good signal power to the yellow wire to operate the solieniod is good hmmm I want to get the starter out but some turkey has put a ordinary bolt in the top and it has a web there to stop you getting a spanner on it g*t. So if any one worked on a black 912E in the late 80's in central LA cheers NOT. Engine and gear box coming out just to undo this bolt....
