Just a quick hello and thanks to everyone who has been posting on the site. I've been lurking the past few weeks while waiting to take delivery of my 66 912. Picked her up in Houston last Saturday and have been having a blast!! Been fiddling with the webers trying to get a little better idle. Can anyone suggest a good meter to balance the carbs? Also anyway to tell if it has a big bore kit without stripping anything off. It has about 500mi on a Paul Weir rebuild and runs VERY strong. Wheeee! Thanks again guys!

It's a 66 912 black on black. Almost zero rust, two tiny spots on the kick panel under the rubber strips. The pans and rest of the body are rust free. 78k orginal miles, fresh Paul Weir rebuild on the motor. Interior is like new, with all new carpets, headliner and seats. Dash is perfect. Everything on the car works, I was really suprised in my testing that there is not one bulb on the car that does not work!! Even the cigarette lighter works!!! The only real problem with the car is a poor respray that is about 8 years old. We plan on doing a bare metal respray this winter but will be driving it this summer!! I paid $6800 for the car, I believe that to be a pretty good deal considering it came with about $8000 in recipts all within a year and a half!!!

They are great arn't they. I just finished restoring my second 912(a Polo Red '67) after my first was written off just before Christmas by young lad who crashed in to it while it was parked. The weather man says it's going to be very sunny over here in England this weekend so I'm planning to take it out and 'give it some!' down those country lanes.

Hi Tim,
Welcome to the board. Your car sounds great. In Canada they use salt on the roads in the winter , so it is difficult to find a car with a body like yours. I removed my engine to put in a big bore kit and found that it already had one. If anybody knows how to spot a big bore kit, I'd be interested to know as well. Enjoy your 912 and keep posting! Thanks! Sorry to hear about the salt...
One thing I'm a little concerned about is a whine when I downshift in any gear. Is this normal or a sign of something needing repair? It's a four speed and seems to be the loudest in third. Any ideas? ------------------ Tim Corn Miami, OK |

Re. Big bore kit. Standard 912 barrels have alloy cooling fins they are not cast. If your cooling fins are not aluninium there is a good chance you have a big bore kit. Although you could be unlucky and have 356 B 1600 barrels and pistion, which are also cast, but this is probably unlikely.

Welcome aboard, Tim-your 912 sounds like a real sweetheart. If you ever make over into the Austin area, look me up and we can compare 912's-mine's scattered all over the garage during it's rebuild, but I've had a couple other Austin 912 owners come by and they commented on how much they learned about thier cars by looking at mine completely disassembled. Thankfully, though, it's finally past the halfway point and is s-l-o-w-y going back together, as time and funds permit. Post some pics of your car if you've got any-we all wanna see!

Hello Tim: Nice looking car! To balance the carbs properly you need a "Synchrometer" flow meter which is made in Germany. This does not affect the idle when placed in the carb as the Unisyn does. You can set the carbs within a knats eyelash with this tool. Good luck, Duke 69 912.
