Post Turn signal's (or- lack of:)

My 1969 / 912 turn signal's work once in a while. Mostly not, and someimes - one 'click' and thats it. I know Porsche has lots of ground problems, but was going to try the Flasher unit first. (Embarrising, but - where is it? I found one in the trunk, by the fuses, but I think that is the Hazzard. And is there a relay as well or are they one in the same ? thanks.

Thats the flasher you found, and there are no additional relays. It could be the problem, but it really does sound like a ground problem. But, if it is the flasher, don't order an OEM replacement. Just go to Kragen or any auto parts store and get a generic car flasher. They're cheaper, last longer, and work better.

Oh, by the way, consider yourself lucky if you get your lights working properly in under 50 hours. It took me months. I had to replace the flasher, connectors, wires, grounds, bulbs, and an entire turn signal. And it wasn't that I was trying to find the problem by replacing parts. They were all bad!

Josh,
How do you replace the Hella flasher with a generic unit, stock flashers for Porsche have 4 flat prongs while standard aka generic have 5. A VW guy told me once there is a way to do it but I never got the info from him....let me know.
I have always had wierd grounding problems with the turn signals. Mine will work perfectly for days, even weeks and then the signal lights in the dash with both flash dimly, then it will return to normal if I rev the engine or flip the signal switch, I bet this sounds familar to many. The electrical reminds me of XKE Jag I once knew.
Good luck,
Chas

Found a few things out - may help someone. !. If the two indicators on your dash blink weakly, or together - equals a ground fault (maybe & hopefully at the bulb itself). Same might be true, going over bumps, rev. engine etc. 2. the Four prong flasher (behind the gages 1969) can be replaced with a three prong newer style. I am attacking my bulbs tomorrow, and applying diletic grease to each.. Hopeing, that will 'solve it' Ha.

The flasher prongs are the same. VW's might have had a different flasher, so might 356. I spent $6 on a new flasher and it worked perfect.
