Porsche Crest advance curve help!

Hi guys,

Just finished my tune up and my 66 runs great. I've got one problem which iv'e suspected for a while. My distributor is an original .022 and i'm only getting around 20 deg. advance at 3100 rpm. That means i have no hope hitting the magical 33 deg. at an idle of 3 or 5 btdc. I've stuck the idle on 9 deg btdc to get around 29 deg. resulting in a fast idle expectedly. Also the greater advance at idle means harder to start when hot. The advance also feels too slow to kick in especially with a cam, big bore kit et cetera.

Question is has anyone rebuilt their own distributor and played with spring tensions and weights in the mechanical advance to alter their advance curve and amount? The .022 is not worn at all so i'd rather get it right instead of moving to the much beloved .050.

P.S i'd love to see a graph of the advanced curves of the many bosch distributors ie. 009,031,022,050 et cetera. Anyone ever seen these?

Regards,

Damon

Don't waste your time and money trying to rebuild yourself. Don Marks is the master of these. Trust me.

Yea Greg i heard Don Marks is pretty good, but i'm down here in Australia.

Chas i found a bit of info on the 022. looks like there only supposed to get around 20 deg. mechanical advance anyways. Today stripped the 022 down, cleaned it out, re-lubed it and checked out the springs. I retested it on the car and now i'm getting slightly more advance around 23 i think. At least this means i can hit 30 deg. at 3200 rpm and can still idle around 7 deg. at 1200 rpm. It's all a compromise i guess. Anyway the car runs great. It pulls strongly through out the whole rev range. Looks like the clean up and re-lube also made advance kick in sooner as well.
