Starter problems
Hi there!
Something weird just happened. After (nearly) driving perfectly for some time my car (1967 912) suddenly won't start anymore. The battery seems o.k. as lights and stuff work fine. I just wont start up anymore. It seems the starter engine is broken. But I don't know where to start to investigate the problem. Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks. I'd first check the connectors to the starter solenoid (on the starter motor) - sometimes a spade connector corrodes or falls off. Also check the battery connection to the starter and the engine ground strap. If all looks good there, use a test light to the starter solenoid wire to make sure that when the ingition switch is turned all the way (momentary start) the solenoid is getting current. If it isn't, you'll need to check the switch itself. Double check both battery connections at the battery and the ground to the battery.

If you are not getting any sound at all when you turn the ignition key, the famous "yellow wire" in the engine compartment may be shorted. This happened to me once & when the wire was replaced all was ok.

There was a popular modification to put a relay in the starter with a fuse to help with hot starts or something. My car did the same thing, but I got down there and it was just a blown fuse by the starter. Get down there and if you see a fuse, that means the PO put an extra relay in there and there may be a blown fuse.

I decided to get the starter checked...and it turned out to be totally worn out once the guy in the shop opened it. Unbelievable how much black stuff came out...
I will get the refurbished starter back today and will put it back in. 99% certain that was the problem. Thanks for your help!! |
