Hey everyone,
Wow, posting back on the 912 forum for the first time in a long time. I have an annoying question, I'm sure, but just out of curiosity, what price are 912s selling for these days?

My first car and Porsche ever was a $2k '67 912 riddled with rust, but new shocks and 4k miles on a fresh motor.

I'm currently selling my RSA and 1st thing is buying a Formula Mazda to race, but I'd also like to go back to a more classic Porsche, and I have a lot of attachment to the 912s. I only want a SWB, I'd consider a '66 but would want to update a lot of things like the axles to '67.

either immediately or eventually I want to put a Subaru WRX motor in it. I've already done and am still doing a lot of research for that particular swap. I'm trying to decide what will be most cost effective for me. I'd rather not have to do another rust restoration. I suppose it'd be nearly impossible to find a 912 that just finished a rust resto and had no motor or trans and could be snagged fairly cheaply. I don't want to start with a show car, but I don't want to deal with too many issues, namely RUST! originality isn't of the utmost importance since this is going to be my own little 912R pet project so to speak.

Anyway, just thought I'd see what some thoughts are from you guys.

Try EBay, Most average 912's go for about 12K, Good to excellent 15K -30K. A couple have gone as high as 45K. Below 12K are rolling chassis and some to a lot of rust.

You will not have a 912R you will have a Porsche/Subaru like the Lotus/ Porsche or Lotus/Ford where the lotus chassis used a Porsche or Ford engine. The 12 refers to the engine type. The 911 and 912 bodies were the same. Just the engine types were different.

You might also try the 912BBS under the Renegade section. There are several that have mixed different engines. I think I saw a Porsche/Subaru for sell recently. Good luck and have fun.

tomato tomahto... to me it'll still be a 912 not a 911 or anything else.

I find those numbers quite hard to believe though. You're talking about 912s with higher values than 911S's of the same year.

I've seen superb 912s go for $12k, $8k get you darn nice cars that could be daily drivers.... the only true rust buckets I've seen have been under $4k. I can't believe they've quintupled in value in 8 years.

I don't know what you guys are sniffing, but when you buy that $45k 912 let me know so I can laugh. I might, might, pay that for a '67 911S in absolutely mint condition

In 2000 I bought a running a and driving 912 that admittedly needed some interior and rust work for $2k Granted I got a steal on that car, but still... Maybe you guys just have some crappy prices on the west coast, but I've always halfway kept up with 912 prices the last few years, and the cars aren't worth that much. They may have gotten a little older, but you're dreaming if you think they went from $12k cars to $30k cars. I mean I'm all for thinking your car is worth something, but let's be realistic here. I'm not really worried about being able to find one for $8k-$10k and have it be exactly what I'm looking for.

Wow no kidding, why did you even ask? A 40k car is 1 in a 1000, but an 8000 dollar rust bucket is common. If you believe the "no rust? description on Ebay then I have some land in Fla for you..."no swamp" Mark

The value of low end rat 912's started to doubled in about Feb 2008 from say $3K to $7-8K just like that, literally over night. I know as I follow them very close and have for over 10 years. There are and have been many 912 sell for over $30k and upwards of $45k regardless of what you want to think or believe. The problem with the market is that solid driver are still low in the $12-$20 range when compared to the rats. The low end entry priced cars must be going to Europe (at 50% off) or being parted to feed the 911 longhood frenzy ether as conversions or for parts.

Avoid cheap cars needing work. Spend as much as you can to get the best car available, probably something that another guy has spent way too much restoring. If you want more power, forget a Subaru; just buy a 911, which will appreciate and have value later. A Subaru engine will detract from the car's attraction and reliability, thus increasing your cost and reducing the car's value.

Besides, a Subaru engine is a 912 is like a Japanese cook in a German restaurant!
