We've gotten this running in the last few days and are looking forward to spring weather so we can get it out on the street

Thanks for the comments. It should be a nice combination when we get it done.
There are some pictures posted up on Picasa, here is a link: http://picasaweb.google.com/autoeroticar/9126ProjectPhotos?authkey=Gv1sRgCKHe4-X87KSKPA&feat=directlink The weather's been rainy in the last week, but we should have it running on the street in the next couple of weeks. The tuner got some 'stock' tuning maps for it, so he has programmed the after-market engine controller with those-- seems to idle fine and throttle response on tip-in is good. He'll have a lot of street tuning to do yet. I'll have to weigh it when completed to see where the final weight came in. The 912 was converted to a Spyder before I bought it. It had been celebrity-owned and ran in a couple of vintage Panamericana races in Mexico before it was converted to a Spyder by a guy in the midwest. We've since embarked on the engine project and have added some creature comforts. The leather seats are from a 1st Gen Boxster, and have heat/power. Should be a little nicer on the cold mornings. The engine and 915 transaxle were recovered from a wrecked 1974 911S. That car was not a true Carrera RS, but had been given an RS conversion including engine mods. The donor car would have been beautiful before it was wrecked, but we deemed the pan and body components completely unrecoverable so just got the motor, transaxle and assorted parts out of it. The engine is then a 2.7L. It was originally CIS-- as you can see from the pictures, we are converting it to port injection. We had bungs welded into each of the ports to accept modern Bosch piezo injectors. Cooling has been a major concern, so we think we've overbuilt the cooling system, including thermostat-controlled high-volume fan, upgraded 911 oil tank and coolers and dual, over-sized, external oil coolers (these are where the rear seats would have been, under a vanity panel) with thermostatically controlled fans. These are also plumbed with an oil valving system that kicks in incremental coolers at 160 and 180 degrees. We've preserved the stock (vintage) instrument panel but with upgraded tach. And, have added one 'tech' touch-- an aviation style CHT monitor system that tracks cylinder head temps on all 6 cylinders. We think all this cooling gear should keep head temps below 320 on even the hottest days. (Ask me in August how that's working!) It's been a longer project than I'd thought it would be, but it's getting close now. TT |

Oh, we did ditch the heat exchangers (no heat, so we won't be driving it in January) and have put a nice set of stainless headers on it. There are two high-flow mufflers-- it's got a nice bark now when you punch the throttle.

That's very nice. I am in the process of converting my 912 to a 2.0 911. Nothing compared to yours, mine is very stock. Do you have a full picture of the car.

With all the rain we've hardly gotten it out of the shop since it's fired up. I'll post some more photos once we've had it running around the neighborhood a bit.
It's certainly going to be 'tail-happy' with more power and the short wheelbase. Are looking at putting more rubber in the back to tame it down a bit. |
