what is the correct year for this seat?

			Hi

I have a pair of reappolstered seats for my 1968 912 with no headrests.... My question is to those in the know: What does the correct headrest look like (round like teh 356's or rectangular)? Are these seats correct for 1 '68 SWB? Cheers Roland

'68 headrests mount into the top of the seat unlike earlier rests which mounted to the backs of the seats with chromed hardware. Not sure if the seats are "correct" for your car. I am sure you could have ordered the non-headrest seats. They will certainly fit.

These are the seats from a 68. The headrests that slide into the top of the seats was not available until 69.

i guess i'm confused. going off of Jaems' reply, i thought you'd need the ones that mount to the back of the seat. the ones that slide in you'd have to get from a dismantler or ebay.

The 356 type of head rest was used until 69, when they went to the ones that slide into the top of the seat.

The picture you show is a seat from a earlier 356. The one for the 912 is a little different more like the one in the 68 picture. |

Thanks for that. The 356 have different levers on the seat. I guess I must have a poorly appolstered 912 seat.

So I am crystal, the round head rests are the go up until '69? Cheers and thanks for the replies. R |

MY 68 has head rests in the seats. Where do I get a horn button like the one shown in this pic? My horn bracket is broken and I don't like the way it looks anyway.

This is inaccurate. My 1968's original seats had a driver's side seat with a headrest through the top (the passenger seat didn't have a head rest, but I recall it did have caps where the holes would be). I may still have the headrest, send me a PM or e-mail.

My 68 is a very late production model and was built at the Porsche factory if that makes a difference. #385 out of the 427. This is the only pic I have at home. Sorry, not very good. Will try to post more tomorrow.

Sorry...., from February 68 on the factory changed to the new seats. With the headrests inserted into the top of the seat like the 69 or had the plastic inserts for the holes. The headrests were an option for the 912. Prier to that date they use the seat with the headrest attached on the back. It would depend if you had the suicide door handles or not. The major changes to the 68 was about this time of the year. With the grill and probably the change in the door handles you have most likely the later production. So you would be using the 69 type of seats.

The picture was from a original owner 68 with was one of the earlier 68 production cars. |

Possible another way to check the approximate build date for a 68 is to check whether it has the third seat belt (shoulder belt) in the front. This was a new federal reg for 1968 models, but I've seen some early 1968 cars (including American) that don't have the third belts. Most that do have them hanging from the roof or the B pillar as an add-on.

Of course, this would only apply to cars intended for the u.s.

Tagging on to Jaems comment, my '68 soft-window Targa built in October 1967 came equipped with lap belts for the front and back seats.
