wiring problems, slow starting

I'm Trying to finish my restoration on my 1966 but I 'm looking for some help. There is a larger black wire on the left side of the engine near the regular that is not connected. The wire has 12 volts in it and always has current so long as the batt is connected. Where does it go? Where does the the yellow wire go? I have a wiring diagram but I still have no clue. Also, I fully charge may batt but the engine still cranks very slowley and is diffcult to start.

There is always one wire that should not be hooked up to the voltage regulator. If you hook this wire up while the car is not running the car should start without the key. This should not be the black wire though. What voltage regulator do you have installed? If you have the regulator where the Bosch part number ends in .049 then you have the wrong regulator and that is probably what is causing your problems. The correct regulator which ends in .068 can be ordered from thepartsbin.com for about $20.
The easiest way to tell is to check how many connection points your regulator has. The correct one should have 6 connections... two screws, two small spades, and two large spades. The three generator wires connect on top, then the a blue wire should connect to the small spade on the bottom, and the black wire, which runs directly to the battery, should connect to one of the large spades on the bottom. Do not hook the yellow wire up! The wiring diagram should have all of these connections pointed out on it. If you have the correct regulator and your connections are correct I would look elsewhere for a problem, but it sounds like you do not have the regulator hooked up correctly if the wire from the battery is loose. The slow turning over might or might not be related to this, but it's always best to fix one thing at a time.
