Oh Goodie, a Newbie with 2 questions!
I have a '66 912.
What battery group size are y'all running? And, I have an under-the-hood light.....how does it illuminate and how should it be correctly wired? Thank You All, David in Eureka, Ca |

1) Here's a couple suggestions for you to take a look at:
non-sealed battery: Size 56, your favorite brand. 51R fits also but has slightly less cranking power sealed battery: Optima D51R Yellow 2) I believe it should turn on when your parking lights are turned on; for the complete wiring diagram do you have the original owners manual? If so check the back pages for the diagram.

the hood lights works any time that you open the hood. There is a switch that is on the passenger side hood henge. It has a little black plunger that switches the light off when the hood is close, kind of like a refrigerator. A black/white wire from fuse 6 goes to the switch with also a brown wire for the ground.
The Optima is no longer made in the US and the quality control is, now, not very good. There is one like the Optima that is a little cheaper and is made in the US and the quality control is much better. It is also a yellow battery. However, I do not remember it name. One thing to note about a gel battery. If it is very low you need to use a battery charger on it. Otherwise it could burn out your generator. They are really made for alternators. |

speaking of drained batteries, a trickle charger is a worthwhile investment. The solar panels that plug into the cigarette lighter work well too when parked while you're out and about

If it helps, the switch for the under-hood light is the same as the two switches (L and R) in the door jambs that control the interior (cabin) lights. However, no aluminium dish or rubber cover is used.
