Sources for 912 engines

Hey there Folks,

I've been lurking on this forum for awhile doing research on 912's. I'm looking at buying one and have been offered a 912 locally at a decent price. Only problem is that it doesn't have an engine.

I'd like to know what it would cost (ballpark figures) to get:

A) A rebuilt turnkey (Motor Meister, HCP Research, etc. - remember I won't have a core, tin, carbs exhaust, etc. Any leads on east coast 912 engine rebuilders would be appreciated.)

B) Complete used motor in running condition (from a porsche dismantler like Parts Heaven in Oakland, CA or private party).

Just trying to get a better idea if it would more cost effective to buy a running 912 (or 912e) for more money (I'm leaning this way), or buy the engineless 912 and install a motor myself.

Thanks in advance,

John in Massachusetts

John:
I've always shyed away from cars without motors unless you happen to know the car's history...things like the condition of the gearbox/diff. are unknown and can be pricey. Also, even if it's a dog, driving a car tells you if it tracks straight, has suspension problems, brakes, etc. My suggestion would be to get a running 912 as a starting point (by the looks of your linked site, you'll have no problem rebuilding one.) If the car you mentioned is an exceptional body/interior, then maybe building a type I or IV motor would work. Also, I'd avoid the 912E - even though I've had one & really liked it, it's just not worth the hassle these days.
Good luck,
Bill.

Don't use Motor Meister! Do a search on them in the 911 Board, you'll learn some interesting stuff. I have hardly ever heard of anyone having a positive experience with them. The fact that they aren't allowed to advertise in Excellence says something.

The Maestro is a great guy to have build the engine, if you go that route. Don't know of any shops on the east coast, though. Try Klub Sport - they are in Florida, they build 356 race cars, they may be able to do it.

But keep your eyes open. Once in a while a working engine comes up for sale (I may sell mine soon, and I remember someone else mentioning on this board that they may be/are selling one as well).

John,

I would agree with Bill for the most part due to the fact that the 912E engine tin is extremely rare. Not sure is you were planning to purchase a Type IV motor then attempt to locate the sheet metal. Other the other had, over on the STF (shop talk forums)
classifieds , last time I looked , there were 2 postings selling 912E complete motors, one had the even rarer tranny attached.

In the past, I have seen these complete 912E motors going for $1k on the online forums. Parts Heaven sold one in the late spring of last year for $1,800. Not sure if PP has anything, I always check with them first, after all they sponsor this forum.

IMHO, a good "move" would be to purchase a complete 912E motor, then sell the thermal reactors. I have been offered up $2k for mine (you just have to be patient, timing is everything).

As for MM, well you may have better luck in taking the money and going to Vegas or Atlantic City, then you could afford HCP (I hear that he is really worth the $$$$).

Good luck,

Bob

Hey there Folks,

Thanks for all the info. I guess that MM is to porsche as GEX is to vw engines 8-(

I think I'll just keep my eyes open for a running 912, and just make sure that I check the cyl. compression and the hot oil pressure. That way I'll know the state of the engine, and can avoid messing with the engine for awhile.

Thanks again,

The advice to buy the car and motor, as a set is right on the money. The economy of a tub without a motor can be quickly lost if you cannot build your own motors or have a line on a good motor. Good 912 motors are starting to get hard to find as the 356 crowd is starting to go to the 912 motor more and more. Some times you can luck out but it isn’t often. I just bought a complete 67 912 motor, from air cleaners to pressure plate, for $160. Got it on the motor stand right waiting for the tear down to see what is still good inside. This was a rare deal. Can’t have too many 912 motor parts when you track em'. :-)

Normally a motor of unknown condition in short block runs $500 or so and a complete, running but not rebuilt, motor will go for at least 1K or more.

For those of you that have a 365 or 912 on the Right (East) coast there is an excellent retired 365 racer that now builds motors full time. Berardelli Racing (703) 971-8139 has been building motors for the Mid East 356 community for many years and his motors are well known in the area. No short cuts, no 3rd under crap cranks, no “it’ll work”, just good top notch motors built from good stuff. He builds from stock to race hot and has much experience in the performance improvement area. One of his 912 motors is featured in the recently published book by Duane Spencer 356 Performance Guide (RPM auto books 888-237-4359) Mr. Spencer is now working on a guide for the 912.

There are three 912 engines advertised for sale on the 912 registry website.

Thumbs up

Before I say anything else, Efrain is the man! I love your Le Mans quote!

912 motors are becoming scarce!
I bought my 65 912 without a motor, but everyhting else was intact.
I toyed with the idae of having an engine builder do the engine, but why...it's not rocket science.

I use Walt at Competition Engineering, though I am on the East Coast...he does my rod recons, head work, etc.

Harry Pellow is thorough, knowledgeable, and concours, but won't make you car any faster.

Also, my two cents...buy as many 912 motors as you can and stockpile them in your basement, like I do. Then when these 356 old farts need a motor, they'll have to come crawling to us lowly 912 owners!! : )

Erik.

Thanks eb - I make it a point to watch LeMans while I work on the 912 or the racecar - makes it faster.

If anyone is interested, I know someone who converted to 911 power and has two 912 engines he is selling. They are in California.

I'd be curious what he's asking for them and what condition they may be in if you have a chance to ask. Thanks

Steve-

Go to vararacing.com, and look on the message board for the handle Homeade 911. His name is Thom Kuby. I would give you his phone number myself, but I don't have it with me and as I'm just about to leave for Phoenix I didn't want to leave you hanging until next week with no way of getting in touch with him.

But you might want to hurry, he will be in Phoenix this weekend as well.

Good luck!
