Original Engine?

How do I tell if my 68 912 has its original engine? The vin is 12801291 and the number stamped on the engine is 1281048.

Bill:
It refers to a Certificate of Authenticity which is a statement from Porsche showing what equipment/numbers are original to your car. I think it's up to around $100 now:

Certificate of Authenticity - Owner Services - Porsche Service - Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG

You can also search your engine number at:
Porsche serial numbers start page
This will at least tell you if the engine is type/year appropriate for your car, but won't verify that it is the exact motor your car was delivered with.

Thanks WF, I don't think I'll go the certificate route at this time but I'll look up the engine number info.

Vin # and Engine# match up to the 912's that were assembled at the Karmann factory so its a pretty good bet that this was the original engine. Thanks for the link.

Engine/VIN Comparison

Bill,

I was going to post this yesterday and then thought better of it since I do not know if I have original motors or not. But after seeing that you're not thinking of getting a COA, I'll post. I have two '68 coupes and three alledged '68 motors (motor SN's look like 68's anyway). Here are my data points (VIN '/' motor SN):

Driver: 12802850 / 1282639
Parts Car: 12802377 / 1282201
SWT motor: ?? / 1283206

I hope these help ngive you a good feeling for yours.

The engine number site is fantastic!!

Just ran my 1968 912 through it and it came back showing my VIN was in the range. Brilliant...
