I am considering inatalling a deep-oil-sumo on my 912, to increase the oil capacity, like on my formula vees. If you are ultilizing one please provide: which type, manufactured by, purchased from and any other recommendations.
Thanks! |

deep sump
Scat Enterprises, which has made aftermarket 356/912 stuff for decades, has a racing cast aluminum deep sump that adds 1.5 quarts of oil capacity, but lowers the ground clearance

I added a 2 quart deep extension to my 66. I had a persistant problem of running out of oil and then losing suction by the oil pump on sustained high speed cornering. An Accusump was installed but only delayed the event. To solve the problem, the Accusump would have to be plumbed into the oil pick-up tube which would be a significant engineering task.
I purchased my deep sump from Vic Skirmants. It installed easily but it did leak from the upper holes after the first drive necessitating a drain, removal of lower cover and re-torquing of the fasteners that mount to the engine case. I ran it in an autox yesterday without any leaking. It does lower your ground clearance by 2". It should be used with a skid plate but none are available for the 912 (356 only) that I am aware of. Another source with a slightly different design is Mainely by Design. |
