Who can help
I just bought this engineless 76` 912e for a mere $1200.00
I would like to put it back to the original 2.0 4 cyl motor but need some advise before I start my search. For starters the car came with allmost everything but the longblock and exhaust. I have all the injection , the complete transaxle which im told is unique to this car ,distributor, all the mounts including the rear bar. Also all the tin and the fan /alternator housing with the alternator. The car reads 80k on the odometer and has no rust anywhere. The paint is new but not a expensive job. The engine compartment is still the original green which is kinda cool but a little to flashly for me. I plan to sell the car when its together to pay for my new drivway which you can see in the pictures that i need. Please help me figure out what the best move is to make. I found this motor on ebay also

The only thing I might suggest is to e-mail that seller on E-bay and ask for pics of the engine. If he won't provide them I might be a bit suspicious. You might ask about his background as a mechanic.
I just read a horror story on another 912 sight of a guy who has been torched for a ton of $$ by a supposedly "reputable" porsche mechanic. What kills me is they won't post his name or the name of his business for fear of being sued. You should be able to make a good judgement as to its condition from those pics. I have heard of people getting burned on e-bay when it comes to buying car stuff, although few in numbers, you don't want to get stuck with a pile of junk. I have personally bought a few 912 related items off of e-bay and have always gotten what I expected and am so far very happy. Craig |

If your going to sell it, you bes bet would probably be find a 912E motor and stick it in. It is allready set up for one, and has 912E VIN numbers. Check the 912 registry's for sale section. There's a few motors there. The one on ebay appears to be a good deal, I would look into it. Don't put too much money into the car. Another possibilty is to part it out, but I hate seeing that happen, unless the car has serious problems. A 911 motor is always possible, ut that requires money, changing to a dry sump, and new wiring harness. A lot of work and you probably wouldn't make any money from it. Just a few ideas.

pjv:
I'd suggest finding a 914 2.0 - there must be some rusted-out ones in the NY area. Only problem would be the heat exchangers, but since you are in the business, a little cutting and welding might get the 914 system to function.Looks like a great buy for the money. As far as the Ebay route, I've heard some horror stories about cars & motors (& actually have seen a few in person.) IMO Ebay is great for parts, etc., but I'd be careful with a complete motor unless it's treated as a rebuildable core unit. |

Without the heat exchangers, you're screwed. Or you can fabricate some. I have talked to a man who put 30+ hours in welding and making functional heat exchangers for his. He says never again!!! It's a good looking body. 914 2.0L will come close to your origional engine, but FI is different on the 912E. 912E uses l-jetronic. Good luck!
