adding a front sway bar?
Hello-
I have a '68 912 and would like to add a sway bar. Is this possible, welding involved? Where is a good source to get the sway bar, size, etc......THanks Ed |

Weltmeister makes one. However most 912 came with a front stabilizer bar. The early 901/2 body Porsches used a different type than a the later 74 on Porsches. The 912 was about a 19 mm bar. You might call Will at Classic and Speed Parts. He carries about everything for the early 912/911 cars also Pelican parts. Stoddard carry the factory one. You might also want to try the 912 BBS. It does everything 912 and all the 912 Registry folks also hang out there.

Location: Placerville, CA.... You know, the only place on Highway 50 between Sacramento and Lake Tahoe the you find signal lights. Above the fog most of the time and I can see the stars of the Milky Way 8 out of 10 nights. Kinda cool.....

Call me a Noob, but I also have a 68 912 and I know I am still in the learning curve....but, I have been going over my suspension photos and can not locate any form of a sway bar. Anyone have any photos of a factory bar that is suppose to be on a 1968 912? Would like the reference so I know what I am missing.
Jaems, Thanks for the info on getting the parts. Thanks |

'68 Sway Bar
Sway bars were not standard equipment on '68 cars. The body mounts for front sway bar are covered with blanking plates; the front bar is bolt-on. You will need the sway bar, the two body mounts with rubber bushings, the two drop links with bushings/sleeves, two a-arm mounts which utilize the ball joint mount bolts for attachment and all associated hardware. I do not know what is required for a rear sway bar, but it does require welding and other consideration.
Here's a photo of the front bar install on my '68: ![]() JerryL made the a-arm mounts from stainless steel; they were too pretty to paint: ![]() |

I just had time to reveiw the PET: '68 911 and 912 front sway bar was 13mm diameter; 911S was 15mm. PET also lists 14mm and 16mm with a 'Remark' of 'M' (optional equipment??).

The front sway bars show up on eBay relatively often. As said previously you'll need the complete assembly and will likely need new bushings (from our host!). The standard sway bar was 13mm (optional on 912) but I think you could get 15mm and 19mm ones. I think the 13mm is good for a driver without the rear bar (which were very rare on a 912 and much more work to retrofit). It is reasonably inexpensive and the installation is very simple (unlike most 912 tasks).
