Steering Rack Tab
Morning all . Greetings from the UK, it’s been a while.
I’ve restarted putting my 1966 912 lhd US spec coupe back together again after a very long period of inactivity . Doing the steering rack and installing Turbo Tie rods - got the old rods off after a lot of grunting and cursing and constant pelican forum searches . Heat did the trick . On one end of the 65 steeri g rack is a curved protrusion which doubles as a boot spring spacer and looks like a shield with a hole in it . I can’t remember what the hell the hole is for . I’m just wondering if I need to put it back or if it’s now redundant . Any help appreciated Dave ![]() ![]() Last edited by BasherBell; 05-04-2020 at 07:15 AM.. Reason: Spelling |

My guess is that it’s for one side of the steering damper which, AFAIK, was used on the very early cars then abandoned. In the early factory illustration below check out the right side. Bill ![]() |

Thank You that’s Brilliant and makes sense .
I’ve just dug through my strip down photos and found the relevant one as well which shows nothing on that part so will not re install but save in the “Old” Box - you never know. I was just a bit concerned I missed a photo . ![]() It looks a bit different now. Here’s the front , just finished some belt and braces Eastwood internal frame coating in some of the cavities . ![]() |

The steering dampers were standard on early 911 cars with their lower front weight balance. I intended to install a damper on my ‘66 912, however was discouraged to do so by some who believed the dampers have the potential to unexpectedly freeze the steering rack.
