911 to 912 Engine

I have a vey nice 71 911E sunroof with a 1974 2.7 and a 915 trans. 2.7 engine has pulling head studs. Thinking about a 912 engine in place of $5 To 6k for me to rebuild the 2.7. Other than adding the engine mounts, what about the gear ratios in the 911 trans?

Why do I want to do this? Kind of a Mad Max move. Future cost of fuel. Cost of future engine trouble. Familarity and experience in rebuilding 356 engines. Simplicity of 356 compared to 911. Cost comparison of heat exchangers/j tubes--piston/cylinder cost diff--cost diff in future machine work between 2 engines.

Part out of 2.7 would cover much of cost of the 912 engine. All would be reversible except for extra set of engine mounts. Car is very nice, and hard to find an equal condition 912 for what I have in the car. Also has just recovered 71 sport seats and steel S bumper. If I bought a 912 without documented engine rebuild, I would probably tear it down to check wear.

How stupid is is?

The 71 E is worth more money as a 911. If it still had the E engine. Probably even with the 74 engine.

If you still want to change the engine to a 912. I would consider the 914/912E engine. It would be cheaper in the long run and you can get some horse power out of it. I am sure the 912E folks can steer you in the right direction.

My heir will have to worry about what the car is worth, my only concern is keeping my stated value coverage high enough. Drove a 60 B coupe with Engine I rebuilt from Tennessee to Durango Colorado in 2000 to West Coast Holiday.

Would you rather deal with a 356/912 engine with a breakdown or a 911 engine? 356 is much easier to diagnose and fix. I plan on frequent cross-country trips when I retire. Do the math on gas difference with $5+ gas and 30 mpg.

Don't like the valve seats on Type 4 engine, sorry.

Engine Mounts

I am not weighing in on the original question but if you do decide to go ahead and convert to a 616 motor, I currently have a set of 912 motor mounts just removed from a '68 912 parts car: $50 + shipping. If you're interested, contact me at wpgraham@att.net.
