Starter Problems (Please Help ASAP)
Ok my 912 was starting fine up until today
![]() Now when I try to crank it over nothing happens! I have checked the connection at the battery terminal and everything seems (I cleaned everything) the lights on the car work perfect however the starter does not. Now my question. What could be wrong here? I know the battery terminal has two cables one seems to be for everything besides the starter and the other for the starter only. Does this cable go directly to the starter itself? Or does it stop somewhere along the chassis of the car? Tommorow I am going to try to use a test light at the starter to see if current is getting to it. However if current is getting to that point what should I check next? Is the relay (solenoid) built into the starter or what? Any other hints? Any fuses or anything on this? Please help me guys I'm desperate!

The solenoid is on the top of the starter. Be sure to check basics first (dead battery, battery connections, ground strap, etc.). I've had the same problems; turned out EVERYTHING was wrong, so we changed everything.

Ok so is there any thing between the positive cable on the battery and the actual starter solenoid?
If I am getting power on one side of the solenoid then it must be the solenoid correct?

A starter draws a lot of current.
A good test to see if your starter is actually trying to work is to leave the lights on. When you go to start the car, the lights should dim. If they dim and the starter does nothing, your battery does not have enough power. Charge it. Was the car running previously, like yesterday? Or are you in the process of a restoration? -Mark

Ok I put a new battery terminal on and the car started right up. However I am kind of wondering if the problem might be when the car is hot only.
Like yesterday everything worked perfect on the car and I drove it about 100miles then parked it. Went back to start it about 30mins later and had this problem. Hmm guess I'll have to keep an eye on things.

Oh the infamous "hot start" problem has reared its ugly head.
Yes this is a known problem on the 912, I have it on my 69. I do have a fix for it and will be installing it upon my return home this weekend. If you send me an e-mail at p912s@pacbell.net I can send you the fix for the hot start problem. I won't be back home until Friday night though. BTW - Saw a sweet 69-912 on the strip in Las Vegas last night, the cutey driving it was a nice touch I must say. |

Ok I went over to NAPA and checked out the relay. It doesn't look anything at all like the one in the Performance catalog. It was just a square relay with 3-prongs on the bottom (the spade style) and no wires or instructions so I didn't get it. I think I will order the one from Performance if Pelican doesn't have it.
The ad says it's a 10min installation and only takes a screwdriver and pliers. It really looks to me just like a ford truck relay.

Instructions and diagram located here
http://www.hillmanimages.com/mailman/bay912.pl?read=856 If you go back to the entire thread there are 2 seperate "pictures" of how they wire in. They both wire in the same way just 2 different sources for the pic. |

Performance Products has their May 20% discount going on. The starter relay, PN 901404, lists for $20.94 but with the discount it's only $16.75...what-a-deal.

I have that relay on my car. At the time it was put on the battery in my car was a dud, but it did help out my starting problem a lot. Since we put a good battery in the car, it hasn't been a problem at all. I highly recommend it.
