need info.on type4 swap into'69 912w/4spd.?
Sometimes ya get lucky?
I have a very good chance of getting a '69 912 (project "B") engine less but otherwise great coupe. I am already working on rebuilding my project "A" '69 912 Targa (motor/resto/paint) which will be down for awhile... so I want to put an economical daily driver together till project "A" can be finished and I can build a spare 912 motor for "B". Opportunity knocks twice and I've located a low mileage 2.0L 914 engine. I need info. on type 4 swap into '69 912 w/ 4 spd.? I've heard of it.... but never seen one installed. I understand I would need to fab.. a front motor mount rail? or does the 1976e motor rail swap into the 1969 motor mount location? Is there any clutch and flywheel issues? The type 4 engine has dual webers so that the stock throttle cable will work but it might have to be shortened or made longer (no sweat) and the cross bar carb linkage needs to be flipped or moved right or left to be in alignment (it's a 914 2.0L engine) hex bar linkage does that too....The electrical hook-up seems to cross over with no issues except checking to see if existing 912 regltr.can handle the alternator or does the 914 alternator have an internal regulator? That's easy too. Also I'll have to find a 1976e header/muffler system. right? It will fit probably. Otherwise...I'm asking you all...(hey!... I'm from south of LA.O.K!) I'm saying it looks do-able right? Anybody with info or knows someone who has a conversion that is running that I could look at...please ask them to post the info.or/ pass on the particulars to my email address. ...this could almost solve my "912 jones" and I'll "A""B" in eternal gratitude to anybody who can help! So... here's wishing you (all) a ticket less good karma for your time!... thanks! Tbonz Last edited by tbonz; 06-21-2002 at 06:47 PM.. |

thanks for reply you guys
I am going to dig into some site searches tonight for hopefully some detailed "bolt by bolt" accounts of how just average guys become driven trying to re-create a clone from bits and pieces of differnent german DOA's ...an unholy wedding! isn't one freak.... isn't enough! No they feel the need...the need to apply jumper cables to...a "Son Of '76E.EEEEEEEEEEk!" igor! quick..bring the metrics... we are off to the boneyard!... but luck has it we won't need a BRAIN ....we will go with the carbs instead! Then we will see what goes (or if it will?)or if it's possible! ..But if it does... you know when... when it LIVES! (look for a mob of Registry Guys with torches) you can't stop me now! you know what I mean?
later.....tbonz |

For an engine mount, you can use a bus mount with drop links. Since you're from LA, you should come join us. socal912.org.

Tbonz,
You may get lucky and be able to fab something from a 914 exhaust. The factory 912E exhausts are rare...I have never seen one...the majority of us 76ers just run a Bursch (the only off the shelf option available). Chris Foley with Tangerine racing makes a complete header system for a 912E. I asked and unfortunately Chris does not fab anything else for a 912E. I will probably "store" the Bursch and go with a SS custom unit later this summer . Craig with FAT performance referred me to a local SS exhaust specialist. It kills me that there aren't any other options for this model. Good Luck, Hope this helps... Bob Last edited by COLDBASS; 06-23-2002 at 01:09 PM.. |

Hello
The factory exhaust system ( type 923 ) nas the same exhaust flange like the 914 2,0. Best is you llok for bus 411/412 heat exchangers. There are big and thin exchangers :the big ones for the bus are heavy. Then you can fit any type 4 exhaust and if you use bus you can selct right or left side exhaust tip. Best is a aftermarked sport muffler like the Supersprint and prolong the exhaust tube. Grüsse |
