How much? Engine?
I am a VW owner and have always been into Porsches. Now I have the chance to buy a 67 912. The engne is blown, but everything seems to be intact. What is a good price to offer for it? I've attached some pics so you can see it.
Also, what is a good way to handle the engine situation? First off, Iknow it hard to truly say since I really don't know the condition of the engine other than.. 'it's blown". But as far as rebuilding, would it be similar to VW, or would it be a lot more considering it's a Porsche? Would a 914 engine be an option? How easy/hard would that be? Aren't they pretty similar? Thanks in advance for any information!

Hey Niterider
She looks like a 69 to me with flared fenders, reflectors in the back and door handles. . All I can say is be careful, you can spend ALOT of $$$ on these cars fixing them up. Go for it $ 500 !!! maybe Brett |

Yep,I agree with adot, that's not a 67,but what you ought to do,is send that darn engine down here to me and get it out of your way
.Yes a 914 engine will fit ,but exhaust, rear engine support, and few other trivial things will need "tweeking",and it all depends where your mechanical skills and your wallet, start and stop Best of luck with your venture!I'll send you my address when you are ready to ship

I also agree with the other posts. I bought a 68 with a blown engine in similar condition to the one you've posted. The body will cost about what I expected, around $3-4 grand.
The engine was a big bummer. The blown piston damaged the engine case beyond repair, both of the heads were shot and the cylinders and pistons needed replacement. Not to mention the clutch, and numerous other engine parts. I will probably have $3 grand into the engine by the time I get it all fixed and runing properly, and that's will all my own labor. I'm just talking parts and machine shop costs. I wouldn't pay more than $750 for one with a blown engine. You just don't know what you're getting until you open up the case!! Be careful, this could really be expensive, even without the blown engine!! By the way, did you look under the carpets? Lost of interesting things can be going on under there as well! Bill |

This may sound harsh but if the body is ok but not great, and the engine is questionable, buy it for $500-1000 and plan on putting a VW engine in it. A type 1 that has been modified will plug in and since fun is the goal, not authenticity, then your overall investment stays relatively low. I remember reading a post by Roland saying we need around 50hp to go 75mph to overcome drag, weight, etc. on a flat surface, so you have options. The blown 912 engine may have parts that could be worth something. Then if the fun comes to an end or you find the body, etc. needs more help than makes it worthwhile, then parting it out to keep others on the road makes sense. It looks like a 69 with unusual rubber bumpers. It might be a lot of fun. Scott, 69 & 76 912/E

I think Scott nailed it - plug in a Type1, get it rolling & if anything else is then found to be wrong you're not buried in the project. Be sure to settle with the buyer on back registration fees if he hasn't taken a non-op permit on the car - they can add up.
Good luck. Bill. |

I would say that if you are going to put a VW in it, put in a type 4.
But then again, the motor may not be too bad. They *usually* are, but if you are proficient with VW motors much of what you see will be very familiar. This board is a valuable resource for information, use it at will. Frankly, I'd be more worried about rust than the motor. Check everywhere there is a rubber seal - under the dash, under the rear glass, the rear seatbacks, the floor pans, the front suspension pan...if those check out okay, I say go for it.

The bumper guards are not from a 69-looks like these are from a 72-73 911. What is wrong with the rear deck lid? Looks like a lot of money could be involved with this one.

Thanks!
Thanks guys for all the info.. it really helped. It turned out it is a 69. As for the different bumpers, I'm not sure. The spots on the back is just grease spots. But I decided not to get this one. He was asking $2500... a little much....huh?
Well, I'm gonna keep my eyes open for one of these... I think I'm hooked. |

$2500 for that car is nuts. Keep looking, you'll find a good one.

Maybe the owner tried taken the motor out the top. Good reason for the deck to be unbolted
. If you look close at the last pix, looks like the motor is on the ground.Maybe 2500 is not that bad. No rust body. But those bumpers have to go Brett |

It's not that bad
Yea.. I actually went to see it today.. it's in really good condition other than the engine... and yea.. the engine was dropped already. The interior is really good... I didn't see any rust... but then again he told me how much and that pretty much made me lose interest. I think it would be better for him to just fix it himself.. he inherited it like that.. if he works on .. he'll make a nice profit...but just not from me.

Hello
This 912 has a set chrom rims. In good condition and 5,5" they are worth something in europe ![]() The most expensive parts are rust and missing items. A blown engine hurts, but you always swap in a cheap type 1 or type 4 to haul that hing to a paint shop ![]() Just keep on pockering. I don´t think the car will go for that money. Make him a fair offer and give him 5 days to think about after each day your interest will drop about 100 bucks. grüsse Last edited by Roland Kunz; 06-30-2002 at 11:51 AM.. |
