Turn signal stalk- 912E
So I just had a lot of electrical issues in my dash fixed, which included replacing the turn signal stalk. It works great now, cancels fine, EXCEPT.... when just using the signal to change lanes etc., in other words, when I have to cancel it myself, it feels really stiff, almost like I'm going to break something by forcing it back to the neutral position. The old no-good one felt the same way. Is this normal on the cars from this era, or am I doing something wrong?

I don't thjink you did anything wrong. Basically the signal switch is reset/cancelled by the tab in the steering wheel. Obviously this seems to work correctly. I think it's not a good thing to force the switch back into the neutral position. My 911 has the same sticky feel and I try to avoid resetting it manually. The mechanism is constructed to be cancelled "automatically" by turning the wheel. If the turn signal switch could be cancelled easily by hand- as with very early cars - it also could be reset unwanted when turning, causing "dangerous" situations. Otto |

OK, so if I get pulled over for not signaling a lane change, I'll try my "sorry officer, I'm trying to make my $150 turn signal stalk last!". Glad to know it's not just me.

I said : "I try to avoid ...". For safety reasons in some situations I just take the risk that the switch/stalk could be damaged and use it. Depending on the country/region you live, you could consider which is cheaper: to pay the officer or invest in another switch. I remeber I onece lubed the switch mechanism and it returned to the neutral position a bit smoother, but it still needed more force than it felt to be good for it. However, I also would like to hear other opinions/experiences regarding the sticking signal stalk. Otto |

I wonder if this is why these stalks go bad? Other drivers of similar era 911's in my area also report broken turn signal stalks.

As I said in my first post, the first type was too loose and jumps in the neutral position with the slightest touch. The later ones have this sticky mechanic. If I remember well, the 914 also had the same problem. So, don't worry too much and enjoy the ride. Otto |

Good to know, thanks! For what it's worth, I think I enjoy driving this car more than anything I've ever owned... which ranges from old 60hp VW's to severely overpowered high performance monsters. Never thought I'd be saying that 90hp feels like the perfect amount of power in a car, but it does. I love it.
