Porsche Crest Occasional backfire???

Hello to all,
I've got this ocassional backfire that happens when I start the car after a long run. I drove about a 100 miles today I stopped to fuel up and when I started the engine, bang! sounded like a 44 mag just went off, after that everything was normal, I can remember this happening a couple times before, usually in the same situation. Could it be timing? The weird thing is it only does it when its good and warmed up. Anybody got an idea?
Thanks,
Chas. 69/912

I'll start the ball rolling...
If you can duplicate this condition (i.e. long drive/full warmup, etc.) before re-starting the hot motor carefully look/smell for any raw gas that might be dripping down an intake throat after sitting hot for a while. Does your car still have any smog equipment on it?
Bill.

backfire...

Hi Bill,
I think I figured it out, the float level on one of the Webers was set a little high, I suspect fuel was running into the heads with the engine off. When the engine was started shorty after the stop I would get the occasional bang. The fumes ignite in the exhaust system and scares people at gas stations. When it has opportunity to cool down, fumes/fuel have time to evaporate, no bang.
I hope anyway,
Thanks,
Chas.69/912
