Really dumb question..
Hello,
All right, sorry for this one. I'm trying to set the timing on my '66 and cannot find a reference to which cylinder is the the No. 1. I have a 911 owners manual and it suggests No. 1 is on the left side of the car to the rear. If I hook up the timing light the O/T mark is nowhere to be seen. Very strange. I rotated the dist. and found a spot where the idle dropped a little and the engine sounded good so I took it for a drive. It didn't ping under acceleration as it did before but I would like to be able to set it by the book. Any help would be appreciated. Regards, Frank |

Frank,
Cylinder #1 is actually the right-side, front. #2 is the right-rear #3 is the left-front #4 is the left-rear TDC will have the distributor pointing at either #1 or #3 Hope this helps! Troy |

Suggest you don't use the 911 owner's manual when doing maintenance on the 912 engine. You could really screw something up.

Hey Frank
Dave's site is a big help http://www.hillmanimages.com/912/ignition.html The timing mark is on the OUTSIDE pulley, not the inside. Very small. Also, not all Distributors point to #1 the same. GoodLuck Brett |

Hey,
Thanks Bret, Troy and Duke. I still managed to make the car run better and not ping without the timing light (somehow) but I'm sure there's more where that came from. I was also using the wrong mark on the case so that would have put me off about 15 deg or so. Dave's sight was also way good. I really appreciate your help!. Night and day when the timing is closer to what its supposed to be. This is what I get for screwing around with cars from the mid-eighties with Motronic fuel injection/ignition. Just as a note, my wife drove the car and said she couldn't believe how far cars had come since the sixties. I corrected her and said I couldn't believe how far they had GONE! Thanks, Frank |
