"NEW" 912,gonna need your help
Hi everyone,
I have just brought a '69 912 about two weeks. A greenhorn when it come to classics and to porsches but very enthusiatic). I have already found this forum great, it helped me sort out my starter system. I enclose a photo , it was love at first sight, but has already caused me a few sleepless nights. the car has spent all its life so far in Italy and doesn't seem too impressed with its new home in rainy Ireland. My main problem at the moment is that the car is so damp, there is a constant puddle in the drivers footwell ( and to a lesser extent the passenger side). I am not in a position to garage it at the moment ( hopefully soon). there are no obvious leaks, I have ordered a few new door seals but I know they wont solve the problem, any advise on where to look for likely leaks and how to waterproof it. to compound the problem my fresh air blower has stopped working (it was working when I took delivery), how can I trouble shoot this system, I would say its electrical but can find no reference to it in the wiring diagrams. thanks for any help offered, looking forward to being an active member of this forum Donal

hi donal,
great looking car, and welcome aboard. you may want to close the sun roof! that will keep the rain out, or just move to Australia, been the dryest year for 100 years. Just jokes. |

my '69 leaked like a sieve until i replaced the front and rear window seals...you can't see any obvious leaks and i had even tried sealing them over with silicon but water continued to flow in nonetheless...the old, cracked, hard rubber just let the water right in...car looks great, enjoy!!!

Donal,
You have come to the right place for help. A couple of my co-workers said your picture is a fraud as there is no sunshine in Ireland ![]() A real beauty you have there, congrats and welcome to driving the most fun car for the money! Craig www.bay912.org |

Donal,
I forgot to mention You can find a 911 (1970)wiring diagram on this Pelican site.....I have found that the 69-912 electrical is a "hybrid" between early 912's and 911's. As for why it stopped working check the contacts at the "slide" control just to the right of the steering wheel. I reached bach up there with a small paper towel with some alcohol on it and wiped them clean and mine started working. There is also a connector on the blower itself behind that cardboard "firewall' that might have come loose. Here is a link to an excellent 912 repair site http://www.hillmanimages.com/912/index.html Craig www.bay912.org |

Donal:
Welcome & what a great looking car. As for your leaks, check everything mentioned in above posts and then do the following: Open your engine lid and look up near where the hinged arms go to the body. On the small, vertical "lip" of the body you should see two small holes, one driver's & one pass. side. These are the sunroof water drain holes and easily clog, causing a backup of water/moisture into the actual sunroof area. You'll need to either run something up there to make sure they're open. If some water/crud comes out you've opened them up, but still need to trickle some water into the area to flush all of the "upstream" stuff out. As for your blower motor, don't forget your fuses - they tend to corrode on the tips quite easily. Turn the blower switch on & then "wiggle" each fuse to see if this is the problem. A tiny bit of dilectric grease on the fuse tips helps. Hope this helps, Bill. |

Hey Donal
First, Your car looks great. Everything I wanted in my first Porsche.. 69 912 Factory SUNROOF . Well I have a 68 912, first but not last for sure. My car is also outside all the time. Leaks tooo. The car cover is a BIG help. If the weatherman are right, I put the cover on. Most of the time it s off. Very little water inside,if any, with the car cover. Lastly, I think it needs another wax job, Its not shiney enough.(heheheh shinest 912 Ive seen)Reallly Donal, Looks great and welcome aboard. Donal,
Holy crap, what a beauty!! I'd have bought the thing on the spot. Replace the rubber as soon as you are able. Water getting in is one thing but where it goes and what it does there is another. I'm not sure about other members of this list but I was told to use OEM rubber parts. More money but a better fit and worth the price difference. Find and fix all leaks first.........I think the new wax job can wait a while................. Good Luck! Regards, Frank |

Nice looking 69.
I was in Dublin only 2 days ago on business. I should be back there soon (ish) maybe meet up. As for the leaks, besides the screen seals, make SURE you check the water vents for the sun roof. With the sun roof open you will see two holes in the front corners Bill mentions where the rear ones are. Many a sunroof porsche has passed away due to these being clogged and rust taking over. I used a wire coat hanger, pulled out straight to clear them out. If these tubes are rusted out, ie so water can drip fromn the roof section into the car.... then quite a lot more work is required. Ask me how I know... Alan.UK |
