what kind of gas mileage do you get?

couple of short questions...

I have a '68 912 and get approximately 24mpg on the highway - sound about right?

also, what type of gas do you put in - is premium a waste of $$ or will it burn cleaner. I usually put the 'good stuff' in, but am now thinking that I may be getting nothing extra out of it.

Touque, my '68 912 has stock Mahle pistons and Solexes. I get about 22mpg around town, and have reached as much as 33mpg on the road, although 28-29 road mpg is more typical.

My '66 with a big-bore kit and Webers has done 22 in town, 27mpg on the road.

I use 91-92 premium, since the stock compression is 9.3:1. When leaded regular was still around I used to mix a small percentage in with the premium, but only because the lead was supposed to boost the premium's octane even higher. But can you get leaded gas anywhere in the U.S. anymore?

thanks for the info Rick,

looks like I am 'close' at least - I know my car is running rich (expecially #3 cyl which I can't seem to correct at the moment). A few more tweaks and maybe I can get it into the upper 20's...

My 912E with my 2056cc TIV engine with44 Idf carbs and max efficiency configuration averages 38-42MPG according to speed and climate...

I feel that 25 is the norm for a stock engine.

Before I put mine up for a long rest while I'm on the ice, "Bitta" was pulling 23-25 miles per gallon.

Mind you, she's still not quite broken in yet at 8k miles. The Maestro, who built the engine, says she should get upper 20's around 10-12k.

I'm shooting for 100,000 miles or more out of this engine. We'll see

Thumbs up

Rick, you can get 114 at racetracks and some performance shops. It is not cheap. 93 is good for your 9.3 /1. I use a mix in my 912. Also, it is true that a little lead goes a long way. Lead has a non-linear effect on octane. The first shot makes a big difference and the next shot only makes a little more. 75% unleaded 91-93 and 25% Lot-O-Lead114 is a good hot street/ track motor mix and should ward off detonation up to 11 to 1. Higher comps should use at least 50/50 or all 114. Just a starting point as the way you drive the car has a lot to do with it as well. Funny thing, higher octane is not higher power. The higher the octane the lower the energy per gallon and the lower the HP from motors without knock sensing systems.
