Distributor causing idle problems? Advice needed

My wrench guy says the vacuum on my distributor is causing idle problems. Recommends the Hot Shot electronic rebuild.

Any advice?

Paul:
He may be right, especially if your 912E is still running its original dual vacuum distributor which relies on "below throttle" vacuum source to pull the plate back to the idle position.
There seems to be an ongoing discussion about whether both or just one vacuum source is used on the 912E dist. I have owned 2 of these cars - one had the advance side blocked, the other used both so it's a draw from my experience. And, I have yet to see a concise factory schematic - others are on the net but don't always make sense. Either way, following the specific timing procedure is critical (AFAIK you can't static-time these cars.)

Thanks Bill for the reply. I guess I will be looking for a new distributor. Or a rebuild. Any ideas where to look?
