Porsche Crest shocks / struts

Happy Holidays to all,
I suspect that the front shocks on my 69, 912 are the wrong ones, but not being a suspenion expert I need to know how would one identify them. I'm aware of the color issue, or is it even possible for the wrong shock/strut to be installed?
My problem seems to be the travel of the shock, to me it seems to bottom out way to soon. I pulled the front wheels and both react the same, I move them up and down and get a bottom out clunk noise. When driving any bump in the road transfers that feeling / noise. It just doesn't feel right. When I bought the car a year and a half ago the PO told me he had the shocks changed shortly before he stored the car. I have found that the PO got taken pretty good from less than honorable mechanics on several occasions, so this has given me pause.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Chas.

Porsche Crest

Sounds like they are worn out or the top nut was not tightened. I have Bilstein gas shocks on my 69 & they are great.
