Introduction
Hello
This is my first post to this forum, on a momentous day: this morning I bought my first Porsche, a 1966 912. Well, I say 'bought', all I did was put a deposit on it; I collect the car on Friday. A bit of background ... I'm from the UK, mid-way through a four-year contract in Cape Town. Previous automotive adventures include a 1974 VW (first car), 1973 Saab 99 (rescued from a field), 1971 Alfa Romeo GT Junior (for sale!) and now the 912. And a host of more modern cars which I won't go into. This morning's search marks the end of more than two years searching for the 'right' car. Instead I've ended up with another project, but such is life. It's a white, 1966 912 of indeterminate mileage, with a few dinks and some surface rust, and a 1700 Type 4 motor. But the bodywork and underside are essentially sound, the interior's pretty good and the gearbox shifts better than any early 911/912 'box I've tried. Oh, and it was very cheap. The plan is to do the couple of jobs it'll need to get legally on the road, run it for a couple of months, and start stripping it down at the beginning of winter. So, first job is to replace the LHS universal joint. Any pointers? Sorry for rambling ... James |

be sure to go to 912reg.org and get registered...
CV removal is pretty straight forward...undo bolts, CV drops out, new CV goes in, bolts go back. I don't think 66's had the little alignment pins...some correct/confirm?? sjd

Hi James you are certainly in the right place to get answers to questions!
Get in contact with 912UK as I'm sure I read that he's on his way to Cape Town! Cheers

I have dropped my half shafts twice now and here's how I do it. First jack up the car and take the rear wheel off. Next get the right allen head in socket form and a long 18" and short, 6" extension. After blocking the front tires with the car out of gear with the long extension do the top bolt. You may have to hold the wheel from turning by leaning against it. Now rotate the wheel so the next bolt is at the top. Loosen rotate next. The reason I do it this way is because the rubber boot bunches up and gets in the way. With the load off the wheel the bolt is easy to reach without fighting the rubber. Once you've loosened all 6 bolts the CV joint and shaft will come off and hang in the air. With the small extension do the top bolt nearest you on the outer joint. Rotate so the next one is at the top and repeat until all are loosened. Good luck. DG

Thanks everybody for the replies, welcomes and advice. I picked the car up on Friday, and dropped it of with my friendly mechanic - more of that later, but it's already thrown a couple of surprises at us ...
Craig: Yes, I found the car here in Cape Town - the climate here's quite kind to old cars if you stay away from the sea air. Cheers James PS here's a quick picture: ![]() More here if you're interested. Last edited by James in SA; 01-19-2003 at 11:08 AM.. |
