Old car smell???
Hey guys..
My '74 is stripped down to no windows, no carpet, and one seat. I keep getting a real strong oil/petrol smell in the car. I have checked the fuel lines. They are all have been replaced with alum tubing. I don't want to put in my new carpet and other interior pieces and have the whole thing stinking so bad no one wants to take a ride. Is it possible the one seat in there is making the whole car smell like oil/petrol. Could the missing rear window be the cause? The car is under a cover so maybe the fumes are migrating from the engine bay to the drivers cabin??? Thanks Kerry

Have you disconnected any of the fuel vapor lines, charcoal cannister, vent line from gas tank?

Why yes I have. I have not reconnected the vapor lines back up. Maybe I should.
I didn't think they were to improtant and were just some clean air thing from the 70's??? I'll reconnect them this weekend. ![]()

I have heard reports, from time to time, of people who have cured fuel smells in the cabin by re-connecting their vapor recovery systems.
It's not just a clean air thing from the 70s, a lot of cars today have similar systems. It doesn't impact performance, and it does cut down on emissions--not to mention (sometimes) helping eliminate fuel smells. Why not hook it back up? --DD

the hoses that run up the drivers side clam shell rocker may be rotted. check them in the front fender well and see if they need replacing.
the fuel vapor recovery system is very important. pack a fire extinguser or TWO.

Check the center tunnel lately for fumes / (new or old) fluids?

You might check the gasket under the gas cap as the overflow has a tube that goes to the area under the tank and is supposed to drain out but it could be rotted. I agree with the vapor line, either hook them up or cal them. Good luck

Hey whats wrong with the smell? It wouldn't be the same without the smell, (or my wife complaining iabout the smell).
Went to Brent Cross today (big shoppoing complex ting in NW London), parked in the top deck of the least accessible car park (in wifes car 1 week old BMW 320). Parked behind 1971 911T, dragged wife over to deck lid, and proudly proclaimed that "they all smell like that", just in time for the owner toask me what the hell I was doing. |
