Shipping Weight of 2 Liter With Tranny???

I figured that alot of you have shipped engines complete. Can you tell me what the ballpark weight is? Also what is the best shipper for such items. I have a potential bidder on evilbay and I have to get my butt on the ball.

Thanks all!!!!
Steve

Forward Air.

Drain the tranny and engine and seal up the leak points (i.e. Tranny vent, dip stick tube, etc). Strap it to a pallet. I'd say between the 2 somewhere between 200-250 lbs, depending on what is left on the engine.

In a fully enclosed plywood crate, all fluids drained, all accessories still on the engine (fuel injection, engine cooling tin), you're around 400 lbs.

Oops, I misread the post - you're including the tranny. Add the weight of that to the above estimate!

Forward Air minimum charge is $45. You can ship a type IV for around $75 to any part of the country. They only ship "Station" to "Station"

I gave them the details, i.e dimensions, weight, etc and the cost to ship out to Cali is 180.00. They said if I squeeze down the dimensions (cut down the pallet), it could be a little cheaper.

That still seems expensive for forward air. Did you fully crate it. What I do is, I get a plastic pallet from my local grocery store and some shrink wrap. Put the engine onto the pallet and wrap it up really good. Beats the weight of extra wood and secures it really well to the pallet. Plastic pallets weigh at least half then a wood one. And the shrink wrap weighs maybe 5lbs compare to a fully crated pallet of 60lbs?

They wanted it palletized and covered "caged". So That is a interesting thought to use plastic pallets. I'll have to swing by a local store and see if I can score one.

I have ship at least 10 engine and trans through Forwardair. They always accept my plastic pallets and shrink wrapped engines. They might frown upon it but they have never turned me away or told me not to use shrink wrap. Your forward air hub might be a little more picky then mine though.

hummm, .. I think I'll take your advice and past experience to task. I knew there where people on the site here who have sent these things all over the place. Sure if the darn thing is heavier they make more money and or my buyer may run away from the costs. I will do what I can to help save the buyer moneym and I do appreciate the guidence.
