transmission questions
Just pulled the trany from the engine. trying to find out why clutch won't disengage. just doing a visual, haven't remomoved clutch assy yet, noticed that when I pull back the throw-out bearing fork it doesn't go back. Is the pressure from the clutch supposed to do that. Also how do I tell if the throw-out bearing is bad.

Spin the throw0out bearing, if it sounds like gravel toss it.

There is not spring return on the throwout arm - it is just the clutch that pushes it back. It will flop around when disconnected form the engine.
While you are there, undo the allen screw that is holding the arm to the trans. Replace the plastic ball cup in the arm (usually all cracked) and the little "Y" piece if it is worn out. Also tighten the ball stud on the tranny as they have been known to loosen up. |

There is a spec. on how tall that ball should be from the transmission. I had a problem with the fork arm hitting the transmission housing before disengaging the clutch. I took mine apart and found that the ball had disintegrated. Put a new ball in but left the stack of washers under the ball stud out and it still didn't work. Had to take it all apart again and read the book. I guess I don't have an OEM ball stud.

If the flywheel has been cut I think you have to shim the ball.

Thats right, Amark. One time i thought i burned out my clutch, turned out to be that stupid ball. I just put a washer under it and the clutch worked fine.
Insane Rage Factor 10, having to pull the tranny to put a $0.35 washer under the throout pivot arm ball. Glad i had a heavy bag in the garage at the time. |

The biggest problem with removing the pivot ball is that it needs a 14 mm socket and the socket won't fit. I ground the outside of a deep socket just enough so it would fit.

I was so pissed I just used a pair of vice grips on the ball itself
