914 Clutch Kit: Which one????
Ok, so I am about to replace the clutch in my 1973 1.7L. As I browse the Pelican Parts clutch kits I am faced with delima: Which kit do I get? There are several there. My car has around 84,000 miles on the original clutch etc. Help!

I beleive you can install a 9 spring 911 clutch disc available from Pelican. Be sure to order a new 'Y' fork piece that holds the shift fork to the tranny.

I have heard that the stock 215 mm clutch kit from VW transporter is a good (cheap) alternative until 110-120 hp.

I am installing a six spring early 911 clutch disc, that pelican sells as a 914 upgrade, along with a new flywheel and standard 914 pressure plate. Also new bushings for the throw out bearing (new) arm pivot ball, new retainer clip, and the two plastic bushings that the TO bearing ears ride in. All from Pelican! (Hoping to get a future discount by shameless promotion of PP!
![]() Mike PS: This is a good time to check your tranny output shaft seal for leaks. Mine appears to be okay but I intend to replace it anyway. Are there any tricks to this? Last edited by maf 914; 04-02-2003 at 04:39 AM.. |

Billy:
Not sure how accurate this is, but I heard from several sources that if you engine is stock, replace with the standard sachs clutch. Putting in a high performance clutch, with a stock engine, especially with some wear, could possibly put more pressure on the crankshaft seals, etc. due to the extra clamping force thus leading to problems. Just a thought.
