Porsche Crest Emergency Flasher / Turn Signal issues

Starting to get my interior put back together, and decided to *attempt to fix a few electrical issues I have been having.

1974 Porsche 914 2.0 with Center Console

Fuse #11 "pops" anytime the Emergency Flasher knob is pulled. (For several years I just ran without a fuse in that slot (no blinkers for too long) -- but it's time to fix the problem).

If I put a Fuse in #11, and leave the Emergency Flasher alone, and the car is turned off, and I turn on either of the blinkers, the corresponding side will light up - solid (not blinking). When the car was turned on (running), selecting the turn-signals (either way) results in nothing.

Is the Emergency Flasher switch bad?
Is there a relay that Flasher & turn-signals pass through?

I've looked at the electrical diagrams, but it's foreign to me ...

The dome light now works with the opening and closing of the driver's door, so I have that going for me.

I do have a voltmeter, but about all I use it for is checking if 12V is present.

Thanks for any suggestions / problem-solving tips ...

Last question first:

The voltmeter is there for "entertainment purposes". It doesn't really say a lot about the health of the charging system, but if you get used to how it reads most of the time you can notice if the behavior changes to start diagnosing a problem. The reading will vary depending on what lights you have on, turn signals, brake lights, etc.

The turn signal light staying on when the engine is off is a feature, not a bug--it's supposed to do that. It uses slightly different circuitry than the standard flashing turn signal, including lighting up different bulbs I believe!

The fuse popping is obviously not great. Not having turn signals is also not great. There's a reasonable chance those two behaviors are related, as you suspect.

One of the big suspects is that someone hooked up the taillights or front turn signals incorrectly. That's relatively easy to check, as well. A good resource for that is [url=https://bowlsby.net/914/Classic/TechNotebook.htm]Jeff Bowlsby's 914 Tech Notebook[/ur] webpage, which has the following diagrams among others:

Take a look at yours to make sure they match the diagrams.

Thanks, Dave. Very helpful.

It turns out that the front indicators were not wired correctly. This helped solve the blown fuse issue, and I now have "emergency flasher."

But, still no Turn Indicators ... and it seems I have lost my brake-lights now. (Not sure if related, or not)

I do have working running lights.

Looks like I have functional Turn Indicators and Emergency Flashers.

Combination of swapped wiring ... blown fuses ... and faulty connections.

Thanks for your help Dave.
