911 stub axles, axles, hubs
My race shop guy is helping me put together my driveline for my six conversion.
He would like me to use '72/'73 911 axles for the rear, which will necessitate changing the output flanges for the tranny, and the stub axles as well. He says the '72/'73 axles are different than the '71 and earlier axles. However, I can't seem to find differentiation in part number from any of the parts houses. Are the '72/'73 STUB axles different than other early (i.e.. 69 to 71) stub axles or can I use '70 stub axles to mate to the '72/'73 axles? Also, will these stub axles fit into a 914 hub that is drilled for five bolts, or do I need to find '72/73 hubs as well (i.e., is there a spline difference)? What about the the output flanges for the tranny? He says I need to find the 901 output flanges from a 911 from the same year as the axles. Something about length differences.

Most of the above I have no clue on.
However, the 914-4 hubs and stubs use different splines from the 911 ones. So you're SOL on using the redrilled 72-73 914 hubs. I have heard rumors that the 911 axles, even though they are too short, will still work in the 914 application. But it depends on the year of 911 axles you are using. Yeah, Brad knows, but someone else does this too, IIRC. I think a spacer does the trick at the trans. Search here, 'cause this came up a month or two ago. Sorry I can't be more helpful, but someone here mkes that spacer.

Yes... but there is a way to do it without the spacer...
I think (from what I can tell) it is as follows... Starting from the tranny 911 Sportomatic Tranny output flanges from 901 sporto tranny '72/'73 911 axle '72/'73 stub axle (not sure if this has to be year specific) Early 911 hub. This combination I believe negate use of the spacer. I'm just trying to get some verification on this and the correct part numbers. Thanks!

I wish I knew the exact years of the stuff I have, but I know it works
I have 911/901 Tranny Drive flanges. Then a Spacer piece that I make. Next is an early 911 CV joints and axles. Connected to the wheel side of CV joint is a 911 Stub Axle and hub. For rear brakes, a 12" rear NASCAR size rotor and some Monster brakes from a NASCAR . I will see if I can get a couple of pictures

Supposedly with the right combination of 911 parts, you don't need spacers.

Not sure what the right combination is... The simple check I have for the length of the axles is I raise the car so that the rear wheels are not touching the ground. If the axles can be moved side to side, then the lenght is not to short. Similarly, with the axles loaded, check to see if there is room to move the axles. If both loaded and unloaded movement is possible, then CVs shafts are ok. IMHO The Axles that I have were shorter that the 914 axles, so I made a spacer.
