Engine Serial # CA012986X
I removed an engine from a '72 914 and the serial number next to the oil filler is CA012986X. Does anyone know what this is? The engine is currently on ebay. It's definatly CA and not GA.

Google on vw engine codes says ...
"CA 49 Kw 66 Hp 1679 cc 2 08/'71>07/'73" Its a bus motor if you are sure its not a GA code. |

The serial number seems valid for that short lived engine but the X at the end confuses me. If it was a VW of Canada remanufactured engine it would have had a sticker with a new number on it so that number is peculiar.

According to http://www.tunacan.net/t4/reference/case.htm , it's a 1.7 engine that made 66 HP. No other information is available, but it came from some VW-badged vehicle. (Probably a Bus, from the post above some particular CA-spec Bus?)
