It's alive!

Finally fired up the car last night, it started right up, ran for 10 seconds and died, diagnoses found the ground to the fuel pump was weak. Fixed the ground and fired it up again, set the timing by ear to keep it running and let her rip. I have two major exhaust leaks, one at the exhaust manifold to head connection and one at the turbo to exhaust pipe connection. Oh, and guess what...one big fat oil leak ...looks like it's from the front, probably the oil pump. Besides a lot of smoke and stink from all the heat resistant paint setting, it went quite well. The relocated oil pressure switch is interfering with the condensor on the distributor, stopping me from bringing the timing all the way around to the required setting, but I'll figure it out. OBTW, I have video of the first start, after the fuel pump problem. I'll post it on a site later today. You can see my ugly face in it!

Randy

Congradulations on getting it fired up. Good luck with the trouble shooting.

If I am visualizing the problem correctly, you may be able to solve the interference with the oip pressure sensor and the distributor by using a sensor relocation hose as sold by aircooled.net. This is a flexible braided hose that allows the sensor to be moved away from distributor.

Thumbs up

Randy,

Cool, you've definitely got the leg up on my project now! I'm still jackin' around with the paint job. Did I mention I suck at painting? Hopefully I'll be able to get the drivetrain in this weekend, but it's looking like I might not make the show. Too much stuff to do, and I can't take the time off of work right now to finish it. ARGH!

Well, let's see those videos!

Later,

G

Thanks guys! My son Kyle will post the video this afternoon, once he's out of class for the day. Grant, I probably will not make the show either. Just to many little things, i.e., the lights did not go up and down the front and back valances, and side skirts need to be prepped and painted. This weather is not real condusive to laying down a good two satge paint. Less hunidity and more heat would be better! I will go to the show, but will take the Jeep. I think Kyle may take his swingaxle pan to sell, if we get the body off of it.
Good luck with the car.

Congrats! Should be a lot of fun when the "details" get sorted out.

BTW, the oil pressure sender adaptor kit is also sold by your friendly local BBS host.

The following link has the first attempt at starting my 2.1 Turbo. I was actually amazed at how quite it is. Still a lot to do, but it will get there. The voice in the background is my son Kyle, yes that is my ugly mug.

Randy,

Congrats! Bet you can't wait to roll that 914t out of the garage. Make sure you get some pics/vid of that for us.

Enjoy,

Randy, this is too wierd. You have a 914 with a homemade turbo system using a side draft weber, I did too. Your son's name is kyle, my son's name is Kyle.
Please don't tell me you are a balding middle aged grouchy so and so with a big beer belly too

That is wierd, I'm 42, no beer belly, but not from lack of trying, I guess I have a good metabolism. I have been trying to grow a forehead for a few years ! My son is 19 and is into VW's like his dad. We are in the process of restoring a sweet 61 Beetle, he has purchased all the parts to build a killer 2276 with Weber 48 IDA's and all the tricks, it should be fun. Dad will probably build it, with him looking over my shoulder, or maybe just the opposite! I also have a 14 year old daughter...Kaitlin, and a really hot wife, but who's bragging!

Sweet ride until you look at the welding job! I wonder who did that!

LOL, yeah... My welding sucks. Not a whole lot of experience here.

Sure beats chicken wire, expanding foam, and Bondo!!!!

My theory on welding is, it's not how good a welder you are, it's how good a grinder you are! Make it stick and grind it down!

so very true.... but you also have to figure in how good of a filler you are too, cause if you keep melting everything away you won't get anywhere either. I've found that if you use a worn out disk that doesn't have much left of its original circumference it tends to be much more forgiving than a brand new disk.

Another way of putting it is get good penetration, then grind it off!
