file size for pix?
Hello folks,
So I finally get the digital photos emailed to me, and I wanna post 'em, but there's one small problem........I have no clue how to reduce the file size! Yeah, I'm computer illiterate. I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing, and as a matter of fact, it took me 87 years to figure out how to navigate around these forums. I'm lucky I can set my watch. I thought I was a pretty good figurer-outer of things, but I've spent 2 hours at it and so I'm giving up and buying some coffee. ![]() Ciao! Jeff |

One way - download Irfanview at www.irfanview.com, and use its resize/resample feature. 640x480 is a good size for posting.

Open the picture in some editing software...go to image size...change to roughly 640x480....

Which OS do you use? Windows? Mac? Unix?
It sounds like Irfanview (above) is a good option for Windows. For Macs, try GraphicConverter. http://www.lemkesoft.com , last I checked. For Unix boxes (e.g., Linux), check out the GIMP. http://www.gimp.org . There is a Windows version as well, I think, but no (free) Mac version. All of the above are freeware/shareware. --DD

'Ello
Soooo, OK I tried both, and I still get a final file size of 122000 - way too big - what am I doing wrong? I did the irfan deal, way cool software BTW, but at 640x180 it was still gigantic. What am I missing? Yeah, I'm a doofus. I'll try again Monday ![]() Have a good weekend, Jeff |

After you've resized it to 640x480 (or whatever), save it as JPG file type and adjust the compression value down to 50 or so. You should be able to get a file size around 40 - 50 kB. Irfanview has these settings under options button when you save the file. Other software should be similar. With Irfanview you can do batch conversions of multiple files also. Make sure you're not saving it as a BMP (bitmap) as they give you the largest file sizes.
