It just depends on which cam it is. Find out the manufacture and PN then call them to see if it compatable.
Depends on what the smog police are looking for, visual inspection (the 1.7L case# won't match the 2.0L injection, also the older engine in a newer car thing), idle, 2500 RPM cruise... There are tricks to pass the basic tailpipe sniffers, but as I'm guessing by your "norcal914" handle, you are in Cali and I'd guess there is no way to pass with all the above metioned problems. |

darn i was worried about that .But maybe ill just grind the motor # off and give a try .Not expecting the best but ya never can tell. Also was going to 165 95 tires to maybe keep the emissions low during the roller test.

I was reading through and cannot help myself. Why don't y'all just buy a pre-'75 junker (like a $500 rust bucket) and take the title and register it to your "newer" car?
I did this here in Atlanta with a Triumph Spitfire. Had parts of four cars and rebuilt the best to fine condition. Then used the '73 title and VIN plate to register. It was also the only one of four that came with a title, although a title search on the other's VIN might have yeilded something. Volia no more emission woes forever. . . This works well on crossover models that are basically the same from pre to post emission control introduction. Also if anyone asks why she's got the newer bumpers, well you just upped them for "saftey reasons". Ian BTW I'm aware this is not really legal. So I'm just asking the question, not suggesting you do it. . . In CA there might be real reasons you could not do this. |

Legality aside, there is always the possiblity that the inspector will look at any of the four VIN's on the car, the one on top of the wheelwell and the sticker in the door are hard to forge.
VW used a replacement case, when they rebuilt engines at the dealer I think, that had NO case number. So you might get away with saying the case is a replacement. After a tune upwith new points and plugs, try putting three or four cans of "dry gas" (99% isopropyl alcohol) in the tank with only a few gallons of gas, change the oil, lower the fuel pressure 2-3 psi, adjust the idle mix to be a little lean, set the lash on the valves a little loose, use a catalytic convertor, put on a working or non-working air pump to pass visual, and the higher aspect tires will help. |

I was sitting here thinking about swaping vin's . Just thought i souldnt say anything about it. Hey anyone out there with a pre smog rust bucket in california?
Also the 76 is one of the last 100 made .Anyone think it would increase the value? |

First off,I kind of doubt that any smog tech is going to be smart enough to look at the the engine #. It is hard enough to find and read them, even if you know where you are looking.
A 1.7 with 2.0 FI will pass if the emissions are withn specs. I will not pass with carbs. [This message has been edited by mikez (edited 10-25-1999).] |
