fuel sending unit location
I've been having some trouble w/ my gas gauge, and suspect the sending unit. Unfortunately, for the life of me, I can't find the thing. I've looked all over the front trunk for the 5 bolt circle, but I can't find it. Is there anything I need to remove in order to find it? I checked the diagrams on this site, and the Haynes manual, but no luck. If anyone could give me very specific directions as to its' location, I would be most appreciative!

Thanks guys, I'll remove the expansion tank tomorrow an let you know how it goes. (THAT'S why I couldn't find it
Nothing is easy on this car, is it? 1) Drain excess fuel, 2) remove expansion tank, 3) remove fuel sensor, 4) see if it's actually broken, 5) fix it, or figure out what else is going wrong. Hours and hours of endless fun...Thanks again, Brian |

I dont think that you need to drain the fuel as the sender is on the top, I'm not 100% though. Should just be able to pull the X-tank and then the sender. It may just need cleaning.
Good luck, and have fun. -Mike

Pull the connector off the top and remove the mounting screws.
Once you get it out, you can check to see of any of the wires are broken inside. Clean everything with some brake cleaner and clean the wires carefully with a scotchbrite pad. Gasoline and junk tends to gum up the lines. Reassemble. That should hopefully fix any erroneous readings.

Thanks to everyone for your help. I removed the expansion tank today, pulled out the sensor unit, WD-40'd all the wires, and I think that the sensor is functioning somewhat properly now. It at least reads something different than 1/4 tank. When I had it out of the car, I turned it upside-down both ways, got to Empty and Full on the gauge, and installed it. Now it's reading a little over 1/2 tank, which is kinda odd since I filled it up about 30 miles ago. But at least I know that it really moves. It may be stuck again, but if it is, at least I know how to 'try' and fix it again.
Thanks again for all the assistance, bri |
