engine lid/window seal

How can I get my new engine lid/lower rear window seal to stay on? This is the rubber flap that runs along the lower edge of the window.

The old one had a lot more spring force in the metal clips that held it on than the replacement does. It keeps flopping off when I open the engine lid. I even tried some weatherstrip adhesive but that only held for a couple weeks.

Any ideas? Do these new seals suck or what?

I thought there was a lip that curled up, and the seal slid into the gap between the lip and the body panel? If so, then try squishing the lip so that the gap is smaller.

First remove the engine lid cover and then make sure you have the seal on the ciorrect way, You could put it upside down and it won't stay. They are not easy to get on so just make sure it is going on ther correct way.

The factory seal has a metal core that holds the seal in place. Sounds like the seal you have is the reproduction seal that has no metal core. The repo. seal is made to glue in place. Might be less trouble to install w/ the engine cover off. Try cleaning both surfaces (seal & car) w/ lacquer thinner. Apply 3M weather stripping adhesive to both surfaces & let it dry, then put the seal in place.

This seal has a metal core, but it is one solid metal piece that runs the length of the seal and is not very springy. I have tried pinching it shut but the metal bends too easily when the seal is installed. I will try the weatherstrip adhesive again.

Ok, I was wrong, it does have multiple spring clips. They are just not strong enough to keep the seal on.

You could spend several thousand dollars to have you engine totally overhauled so that you don't have to keep popping the engine grill open all the time........that'd probably stretch the couple weeks you are currently getting with your seal to several months!!!

Haha... Very funny.

I finally got it to stick. I pried open the clips to expose the channel, and then coated both the metal ledge on the car as well as the channel in the seal with a NEW tube of weatherstrip adhesive. My old tube had gone bad and was just making a stringy mess, preventing me from getting a good coat on anything. Then I put another thin layer on the car (like the tube says), slid the seal on, and crimped it shut with a pair of pliers. Now it's on there pretty good.
