914 exhaust options
Hi. I'm planning my build. As it stands, it will be a 2056cc carbureted motor. I've seen the SSIs, which are pricey, and some much less expensive options. I've also looked at the Tangerine Racing headers, which are super nice but very expensive. If I want heat, the SSIs look to be the best option. But, they aren't equal length runners, and I wonder if they are any better than stock.
What are your recommendations for a solution that won't hold the rest of my build back? Thanks! Steve |

The SSIs are roughly equivalent to stock. They are actually slightly larger inner diameter than the stock 2.0 pipes, which are slightly larger in diameter than the 1.7/1.8 pipes, so you might see a little gain. (And don't even consider the 75-76 exhaust for performance, it is terrible.)
You can help the stock HEs or SSIs a little bit by putting an 4-2-1 type muffler on, but the gains are still pretty small. Bursch makes one, and it seems to work a little bit but does rust fairly easily. Tangerine Racing makes a stainless muffler (!!!) that is designed to mate to SSIs and provide better scavenging. Not a real tuned header by any means, but knowing Chris Foley it should be noticeably better than stock. Speaking of Tangerine, they do have a heat exchanger option for their headers. It's much smaller than the stock exchanger, so don't count on it for more than defogging the windshield, but it's better than nothing! Other headers include European Racing, Triad, and Kerry Hunter. That is roughly in decreasing order of both price and performance. I have seen a few other things advertised as headers, but they really were just merged pipes that bolted onto the stock exchangers and you could put a muffler on. You might be able to find some used headers, but those are going to be taking pot luck. --DD

I was thinking real hard about getting one of those Monza quad tip systems, but I've read nothing but bad things about them (cracked welds), although I do like the looks of the quad tips. I've also seen a Sebring system that looks pretty simple, bolt on at the heat exchangers, equal length tubes going into a center collector, then into a single pipe that goes into an oval muffler with a single exit pipe out the valance. The Monza was over $300, while the Sebring is under $200. I'm really leaning towards the Sebring at this point, although the Monza has a 3-year warranty. This is on a basically stock 1.7 motor, that will get driven maybe once or twice a week, so no high-end exhaust here.

fwiw, I ran SSI's on my carbed 2056, in part because I needed heat living in the northeast. Ran great. Maybe I left a few HP on the table, but as an AX,DE,Weekend car, it really didn't matter too much vs having warmth for early and late season events and even winter (non snow) use.

Are there only affordable options for those of us who do not need heat? I've seen the headers at Tangerine, but they are pretty expensive. Any ideas?

Google up:
Kerry Hunter headers Eurorace headers Triad headers Or start digging through the classified ads for a used set. Heh, just noticed I mentioned those four options in my earlier note. You can try talking to someone local. A good exhaust fab shop can probably put together a decent set of headers. How effective they are will depend on how much they know about the Type IV motor. Some knowledge from the Type I (Bug) will transfer, and likely some from the flat-four Subaru world. I don't know how much having your own exhaust fabricated would cost, though. --DD

Hey, Marty, I didn't know you guys were still making -4 headers! I will have to add that to the memory banks so I don't keep leaving you out as an option.

For getting them new, I called Triad a while back and they are not making new ones anymore, and Kerry Hunter's website has been gone for a while.
Thanks for the tip on MSDS.

Marty, what options are their with your Type IV headers to integrate with a muffler for street use?
Thanks

First off...I avoid any type of glass pack, shiny eBay special, or SuperTrapp muffler. Most of our T4 customers use the MagnaFlow cylindrical muffler, small oval turbo style muffler, and of late; the single inlet 911 SC /Carrera style banana muffler. For bracketing, simple bracket (s) off of the rear transaxle stud. Small adjustment of the exhaust tip and that's it. |

This topic is very interesting, but I am currently building a 914 with a larger engine and am not able to find anything suitable in term of exhaust. Is really absolutely nobody else than Tangerine Racing making a large 4-1 for 914 (let's say 1 3/4?)
Any tip is appreciated |

MSDS and European Racing.
Or talk to a local exhaust shop. --DD
