BEAUTIFUL!

What finish is that on the intake runners? Looks like anodizing.

Thanks,
The finish is a Dupli Color (sp?) anodize look finish. Lots of sandblasting, wire wheel polishing, painting and even a bit of the kitchen oven.
Notice I coverd the fugly trans. Anyone have any good tips on how to clean the case.
I don't need it to sparkle, but it is gross now.
i also have to find a way to tidy up the engine wiring harness, its kinda fugly too...
Dave

I just used this citrus oil based aerosol cleaner, was a gift, some generic name.

It's super potent, and I used a stiff plastic brush, probably a comparable kind near you. Stuff that was unscrapable just ran off with a swipe.

_WORD OF CAUTION_

It makes your car smell unlike a Porsche for about an hour.

If I owned that engine I might just put it on the coffee table in the living room. Don't tell my wife, but it looks better than any of the stuff currently decorating the room.

I used a steam cleaner to go after the tough dirt/oil/grime on one transmission. PIA, but the stuff would come off with a presure washer.

Next time I have the tranny in pieces, I will take it to a machine shop and have it hot tanked.

James

What about the Napa Carb cleaner? Comes in a 5 gallon pail for like $50. Maybe use a stainless steel garden pump sprayer?

I didn't realize my transmission was madeof metal until I attacked it with several different cleaners. I started out thinking that carb cleaner would do it, but it didn't do anything really. Turns out in the end that a combination o screwdriver and Castrol Super Clean works well. I tried foaming engine brite (which is apparently bad for the housing though I don't know why) and I tried other less expensive degreasers, etc. I've gone through a couple gallons of the stuff and the transmission is mostly clean. There's still some gunk on it, but I decided that its clean enough that touching it doesn't make my hands black, so thats good enough for now (for me). The worst part of cleaning the transmission is that the grease really hardens to where you ahve to chip it off with a good deal of force. I'm not sure that any other method would really work well. Pressure washer sounds like a nice alternative possibly.

I cleaned the tranny using Simple Green, brushes, various scraping tools, and rubber gloves, outdoors on a cold day. It took a couple of hours. It's clean now, but no beauty. The oxidized magnesium of the case is various shades of gray, but a least the castings and fasteners are no longer coated in oilly gunk.

I've seen the transmissions super-duper clean and clear coated before. Poishing them is a Bad Idea IMHO, as the oxidation on the outer layer actually is a protective barrier and keeps the rest of the metal from oxidizing.

That engine really is a work of art. You're going to have a real chore keeping it clean and pretty after you install it! But that silver engine tin will throw the light around very well in the engine bay.

For the wiring harnesses, most of the large electronics supply places should have shrink tubing in a variety of sizes and colors. You will likely have to pull the metal contacts out of the plastic plugs to slide the shrink-tubing over the wiring, but that's not that awfully hard.

If you want a better-than-new wiring harness, talk to Jeff Bowlsby. http://members.rennlist.com/914_wiring_harnesses
I would be surprised if he couldn't find shrink tubing in non-grey colors and use that when he made your harness.

Oh, wait... Hmm.... Yours looks like a 1.8, and last I checked he did not make 1.8 harnesses. Well, he's still at least worth talking to about it!
