Factory Wheels

Does anyone have any info about this wheel? I was looking at a 72 with these on it today. I have never seen them before, are they worth anything? Are they a Porsche made wheel?
Thanks,
Eric Taylor

If my old eyes don't decieve me they are "American Racing Daisy Wheels" (as we called them). Back in the "good 'ol days" American Wheels were light, strong & cheaper than the factory stuff.

They are worth whatever some cranky old fart will pay for them. Ya gotta like the looks of them or be a nostalgia weenie. Sold a set for $150.00 (4 whls).

Weren't the American Racing wheels that fit the 914 5.5 x 14"?

American Racing "Libre". Still very popular with the Datsun 510 crowd. They came with a fairly large bolt shaped chrome center cap. I have always liked them.

Am. Racing and Le Mans look the same as do early Riviera and Formula V. Good reference page.

Thanks for the input, that link is really great! My only question is why do they have porsche center caps? It seams like most aftermarket wheels don't have them, that's what made me think they were worth something. Oh well it looks like i'll ebay um they've got brand new tires so maybe $200.

'cause someone wanted to double the value of the rims
Those center caps when brand new cost more than the wheels.

Just someone being creative, that is all. The "real" 914 factory rims don't have a Porsche emblem, just another way for the factory to save money

That wheel style is still in use, on the SCCA Spec Racer Ford cars (formerly Spec Racer Renault). I've checked them out but couldn't determine if they were American Racing or some other make.

And yes they were popular on the Datsun 510. The BRE Racing Team used then on their beautiful Trans Am 510's. I had a 510 and always wanted a set, but never did get them. There were versions for the 240Z amd PL311 roadster also.

Dave,

Is that your wheel page? I think I can identify one of the unknowns. The second from the last is a wide ATS Road Star. When I worked in Germany I saw a couple of flared 914's with these wheels. This wider ATS wheel appeared to be 7" at least. The ATS Road Star photo you show in the second picture appears to be a 5.5 x 15 VW/914 wheel. I had a set of these, but in solid silver, on my 914 and used a 185/70 x 15 tire for several years. Because of the offset I am not sure if a wider tire would fit the rear. The shape of the spoke is slightly different between the two wheels. The narrow wheel spoke extends right to the edge of the rim. The wider wheel has more rim offset beyond the spoke so the spoke ends inside the wheel and appears to be shorter as a result.

There are 4 ATS Roadstar wheels for sale on Ebay now. Two are 7". Unfortunately they are overseas and shipping is listed at $300!

Not my page, MAF. A pretty good one though! Surf around the site for contact info and let the owner know what his unknowns are.
