Sounds like the rebuilder of the gearbox thought it was for a 911, and put the ring gear on the wrong side of the pinion gear. It's easy to do, especially if you build both 911 and 914 gearboxes.

The solution is to partly disassemble the gearbox and put the differential in the correct way. You'll very likely need new paper shims that go between the intermediate plate and the main transmission housing; measure them because it's very important to get the same thickness.

Note that the above assumes you still have a 914 transmission!! If you have a transmission from a 911, then you still have to flip the differential around but there may be other work you have to do to in order to accomplish that.

Yep, DD always has the proper answers! The other, more involved option, is to run either the 914 or 915 (911) transmissions upside-down with cable shifting and the
vent swapped to the new "top".

Additionally, because with either run upside-down...
1. there will be a more extreme CV angle. I'm gonna run 930 CV's with an upside-down 915. They can operate easily with the more extreme angle.

2. When run upside-down under power the differential wants to deflect toward the side-cover. So it's prudent to run a billet side-cover from CMS or Rebel Racing.
CMS has them for both 901's and 914's.

3. The 915 has a 2-piece bearing retainer. You and I run more power (I run a 3.6L 993 engine) so I like the CMS one-piece retainer. It's only slightly more tricky to install.

Note: I chose to go with a 915 because I tired of breaking the 914 pinion teeth. Also,
the 915 is only a little stronger, but there is a lot more meat on the ring and pinion.

Only slightly off-topic!

Good Luck,
Ron
