901 question
I did an oil change on my friends 914 and the gear oil came out with a decided gold tinge to it. The color would settle so it looks to something is wearing in there (thrust bearing ?). The drain magnet had quite a bit of black sludge stuck to it (ferrous).
There had been a hot shift difficulty issue but with a clutch adjustment (better) and a change to Swepco 201 (much better) it is now shifting well. Any ideas as to the gold contamination ? Thanks

Brass from the various "yellow metal" parts in the transmission. I don't remember off the top of my head what parts those are, but there are some. And they do wear, and when they wear badly enough the transmission will have issues.
Rebuilding one can be an expensive proposition, depending on what is wrong. Folks like "Dr Evil" can give you some insight into what may be happening. --DD

Hi
The shift forks and some bearing cages are made from "yellow" metal, ie brass or bronze. Hope this helps. |
