exhaust stud removal... #@%$& rust

I am replacing the heads on my 1.7 and can finish the job within an hour... except that 1 of the exhaust studs on the replacement head was cut and has no thread to get 1-2 nuts on to remove the stud... I tried vise grips... all that did was take the first couple of layers of soft rust off the outside... how can I get this ^%$#@ out?!

If it's long enough, buy a stud puller - should be avavilabe at you local AP store.

or drill it out and retap for a step up/down stud. just don't go too deep. get ALL new nuts, the correct ones, buy 16, then you have them on hand for next time. not the ones from the hardware store or flaps.

don't know if it's long enough, but I'll give it a shot... I want to try to avoid drilling/tapping... too risky if you don't have the right equipment IMHO.. someone also suggested heating the stud slightly and then using the vise grips... I'm not terribly comfortable with that either

Don't be afraid to use heat. Remember that area routinely reaches very high temperatures thanx to the exhaust, and your attempt to remove that stud is with the head stone cold. Heat the head, not the stud; it will expand the hole and loosen its grip on the stud. My local engine builder routinely uses a torch when he's replacing studs.

I worked on this selfsame thing for days till I went out and bought a stud puller. I killed two pairs of vise grips before this came to me, and it took 10 mins to get the stud out with the puller. Sears carries a good one, they may have the only patent...

I think Sears has everything when it comes to tools. The stud puller I have would not fit in there. I used heat and then vise grips. The last heads I did the studs all fell out. I took them down and had time certs put in. Worked great. But the heads were off the car.
