In Pelican's online catalog the USA and European piston and cylinder sets have the same part number except that the USA p/c's have an A tacked on the end of the part number. Could it be that the A at the end of a part number denotes a part for a US model car?

The 'A' tacked onto the end of a part number means that the part has been revised. The letters go on, and some parts are up to 'H' or even more.
