Engine number question
I have an engine that I just remover from a 74 914 supposed to be a 2.0. The number is located in the place between the oil filler and fan housing. The no. is C V 027791 I don't see a C V code in any books I have. Can anyone tell me what this engine is ?
Thanks, Jerry |

CV is the code for 1980-1983 Vanagon. Unique case and headers.

the CV engine code exhaust ports are "square" rather than the 914 oval ports. the oil filler in a CV engine (when stock in a vanagon) is attached at the base of the case not thru the top "breather" of a 914 engine and the dipstick is in a long curved tube. try to imagine accessing these 2 through a door in the rear body of the vanagon as the vanagon engine is in the normal vw location. i think DD said the 914 type IV engine case is stronger than a vw van type IV engine case.

Not that I know of, though I quoted someone else who said that in the 914 FAQ. I don't really know which one is stronger, frankly...
The CV case would originally have had the oil filler area on top (where the 914 filler goes) closed over with metal. There would have been no hole at all, just blank metal. This can be changed by having someone machine off the metal, leaving a hole for the 914-style filler and breather. The 914 dipstick would also have to be added. The cylinder heads that originally came on CV engines had "square" exhaust ports and the 914 exhaust would not bolt up to those ports. They just wouldn't fit. That can be corrected by swapping on 914 heads (or heads from any other VW Type IV engine). The engine could be used in a 914, but it generally takes more work than is reasonable to do. --DD

Thanks Dave,
This engine has the oil filler and dipstick in the normal 914 location. It has stainless steel 914 heat exchangers on it. It has what looks to me to be the stock D-Jet fuel injection from the 914. It was in a running 74 that I bought as a parts car. It has all the stock 914 engine tin. I don't know any of the history of this car or engine, my guess is the engine is a combination of VW and 914 parts. Anyway, I am going to plug it in my 73 Jerry

does it have the "3-bolt" heads of a porsche 2.0L? if it has the D-jet FI and stainless steel heat exchangers, it would seem to be a CV vanagon case and everything else is 2.0L porsche. as was stated, you couldn't bolt up the exchangers to a vanagon square port head. describe the oil filler again. is it/has it been machined or does it have a vanagon breather. the vanagon breather could conceivably be removed to enable you to fill oil. is the mounting connection at the base of the case blocked off or does it still have the oil fill tube?

The oil filler and dipstick are in the normal 914 2.0 location. I don'know where it would be on a Vanagon motor, I don't know very much about these engines. Other than the Cv number this engine looks like any 914 2.0 motor

i am trying to paste a pix of a type IV motor. the oil fill on a vanagon motor is attached at the lower right of the motor. the fill is a tube that angles out of the case and then up and is capped off with a removable cap. sounds like your CV case was modified for installation in 914. couldn't find the pix i had of the CV case breather.

Cylinder heads--check this page for a bunch of info. It has pictures of the 914 2.0, the Bus 2.0, and the "Vanagon" heads. The ones on your engine originally would have been the Vanagon ones.
For crankcase info (and pictures), see this page. --DD

Thanks for the info. This engine has the 3 intake manifold stud 2.0 914 heads. I guess whoever built this motor modified the case for the 914 oil filler and dipstick. It all looks like stock 2.0 914.
